i just got the game in the mail today
iv been playing but still cant figure out how to make money other than getting shells

You might try digging up fossils and the other musical things (gyroids?) and selling them to Nook. ID the fossils before selling them to nook. Also fishing and catching bugs and selling them to Nook will get you a decent amount of bells
