Between the unlimited armada of fanboy opinions, and flame wars seen on countless websites, I am here to step forward and give you a review from a different perspective. Not only will I review a ps3 (GASP FROM THE CROWS OF MILLIONS OF FRIENDCODES USERS), But I will also review aspects of other next gen consoles.
To kick it off, the ps3, it's just plain amazing. It was worth every penny of the 600 bucks I spent. Graphics, gameplay, online, and features are amazing. Plus it's very shiny and I can use it as a lighthouse if I get lost in my room on a foggy night. But in all seriousness, lets get this review going.
Games/Launch titles- I will be probably the first to admit that the ps3 did not have many good launch titles, but look at the wii and the 360. Wii had... Wii sports... And Loz:TP... I'm sorry but That racing game, complete insult to next gen gaming. Excite truck was horrible, and Rayman, was fun for the first 5 minutes, then got annoying and boring. 360 had... *crickets* Well halo 2 was still running strong wasn't it? Okay so perfect dark was a little cool, but that's about it. But look at the 360 now, lots and lots of good titles coming out for it. Imagine the potential of the ps3 once the developers learn the coding, and when they use the full expansive regions of the 55GB BluRay discs. Great games, and remakes are all coming out. Half Life 2, and both Half Life 2 episode 1 and Half life 2 episode 2, there is also an unconfirmed but very rumoured about Half life Orange, which will come to 360 and ps3, containing Team Fortress Classic, and Portal. FFXIII will have three different types, the single player, versus, and some other one no one really cares about. Splinter Cell: Double Agent is being remade to fit the Cell processor and unlock some of it's potential. F.E.A.R. is going to feature a remade engine (So is Half life 2), and Oblivion is rumoured to have a new engine at release. Resistance fall of man was one of the BEST games I have every played. Graphics looks flawless on my standard definition TV, and loading times were quicker than I expected. Online was a great aspect, and lots of people available to play, lots of modes to play. Speaking of online...
Online Features- PSN (Playstation Network) Is at it's birthing stage right now. Just released, sony is attempting a new type of online service, close to that of microsoft's Xbox Live. I admit it though, no online service will probably ever match that of Xbox live, but companies can attempt to get close to it. The PSN is very limited right now, Resistance reacts very oddly with the idea of PSN, because it does not import your buddy list, and it does not show the recent players you have played. Future patches released from Insomniac are rumoured (Gah don't you hate rumours?) to fix these issues. So how's the online play on the wii? OH WAIT, did nintendo not give you any? Oh I'm sorry, I thought they said they were at E3. Online titles are coming for the Wii, but Rayman woulda had some potential online, not to mention Wii sports online, but no, all you can do is Wii mail, and go to each other's Mii towns. PSN offers Video chats, chat rooms with multiple buddies, voice chats, and messaging. Ps3's internet browser is a slight upgrade from the PSPs with a couple more thrown in features. The wii's browser just feels very sloppy to me. I've yet to try to plug in a USB keyboard to a wii and see if it works, but Keyboards and Mice both work on the ps3 when using the browser. There is also the playstation store. From here you can buy demos, full length PS1 games to play on your PSP, game and movie trailers, and (again another rumour) soon to be music. Wii has the Wii shop channel, which is nice to see some good ol titles from the SNES and the 64 titles are coming too, kudos to nintendo for picking good ones. Xbox 360 has a good marketplace too, and they got a year of head start on both nintendo and sony, so they have many more titles in theirs. But just wait, sony and nintendo are both gonna catch up.
Controller- Every day at school, I hear from the little nintendo fanboys "PS3 STOLZ0RZ T3H CONTROLZ0RZ FROM NINTENDO ZOMFG" Well if you ever play with the Sixaxis (Haha get it, ROTATE the six and the xis around the a.) you will realize the tilt sensitivity is much different than the all around aspect of the Wiimote. The wii uses Motion sensing, while the ps3 uses tilt sensing, such as driving a car, or flying and airplane, the ps3 is the CAR or the airplane, rather than the Wheel on the wii. Sixaxis features no rumble, but after playing with none for a month now, I am actually glad it's gone, no longer do i feel random spasms in my hand from firefights online. ;) And how about them rechargeable batteries, oh wait, the 360 didn't INCLUDE the rechargeable battery pack, NOR the recharge station. And the wii runs on AAs. The ps3 controller can charge and play at the same time Via USB connection. Sure the USB cable doesn't come with the controller, but it's a standard Camera connector, you know, big to little, so I have around 5 of those, so I got no problem charging. The battery life is AMAZING, I played for 2 weeks, close to 4-8 hours a day, and it finally ran out of charge.
Other Features-The ps3 features more than just good graphics and BluRay technology. Ps3 has an internal wifi receiver just like the wii, except the magic of the ps3 allows it to be an access point too. You can use the ps3 to let your PSP have a network to connect to, and even use some of the ps3 features ON your psp, such as browsing the internet, and checking your messages, but future updates are CONFIRMED (HAH NOT A RUMOUR) to be coming, to allow broader things. F1 racing, for example, the PSP will be used as a rear view mirror, now that's innovation. Importing music is as simple as inserting the CD and ripping it, or plugging in your iPod and going to ipod_control > music, then pressing triangle and copy. Videos right now can't support all format, but updates are confirmed to add more formats. Bluetooth device support is amazing, almost every aspect of the ps3 can be wireless, controllers, head sets, internet, if you look at it, the only thing that can't be, is the power and the connection to the TV. the HD on the ps3 is absolutely amazing, it brings out every single detail you could ever want. The backwards compatibility ALL the way back to ps1 is absolutely fabulous, of course there are some that don't work right, but all mine that I play work fine.
So there you have it. The ps3 is NOT a bad system, and it may not be #1 in sales, it's doing very well. Even if sony loses 200 dollars per system, they can still succeed and make their customers happy. I know I will be using my ps3 for years to come until the next generation. As for the console war, I say all consoles have won, they have showed the trueness of next generation, wii with it's innovations, ps3 with it's graphics and MAJOR power, and the 360 with it's extremely enhanced online. To each his (or her) own when choosing which console to stick with. Whoever thinks that the ps3 is going to cause sony to leave the gaming business, is very wrong.
