Best read while listening to the battle music for this game (Strongly Recommended)
Super Mario RPG (My Third Review)
Published by: Square
Genre: RPG
Number of Players: One
Release Date: 1996
Introduction: The beginning Cut scene of the game shows Bowser Grabbing Peach and taking her to his castle. Mario jumps up and chases him. You have a quick battle where you break the chain Bowser is hanging from to stop him.
Suddenly he throws a hammer at Mario's chain bringing him down too. Bowser takes one last swipe at Mario and misses.
When Bowser hits the ground, out of nowhere a sword comes out from the sky and lands on Bowser's castle. The impact sends Mario flying back to his house. Peach is still inside the castle so he returns only to find the bridge destroyed on the impact the sword made. You then have no choice but to turn back and think of another way to save her.
Controls: The controls are pretty easy. Move with the D-pad, Jump by pressing B, run faster by holding A and press X To see the menu screen. During battles, you select your form of attack and select enemies with the D-pad, Press A to attack, press Y to choose among your list of special moves, press X to choose an item and press B to do other things such as defend or run away. I give the controls a
4/5

Gameplay: When Mario sees an enemy, He touches the enemy to start a battle. Mario fights with his fists in the beginning of the game but can find or buy weapons such as koopa shells and hammers to aid him in battle. There are also other things in stores that help you such as armor, items and pins/badges. During his adventure he will find friends (And old enemies) that will join his party and aid him in battle.
Since this is an RPG you get experience for winning battles and level up once you get the right amount. You even have the option to choose which attribute you want to build up after each level-up. There are three things to choose from:
Power, which increases your attack power during battle.
Health Points, (Pretty self-explanatory) and
Mg.Attack/Mg.Defence which boosts magic attacks which you learn later in the game. This game is alot like Paper Mario but in my opinion, it isn't as fun. I enjoyed the game however and I give the gameplay a
5/5.
Sound: Some of the music is catchy like the
Battle Theme and some of the music sets the mood perfectly like the
Sunken Ship Others are just plain annoying like the
Town Music. I have given links to the music so you can decide which is catchy or annoying. I give the music a
4/5. Replay Value: After you beat this game you may not want to beat it again right away, but after a break from it you may want to. There are fun mini-games that you may want to play over and over too. Since this is an RPG you can experience the game in different ways such as when you level up, keep choosing to bring up power, or health and play the game being extremely strong or with a bunch of health. I give the replay value a
3/5. Pros
+ Mario's First RPG
+ Fun Battle System
+ Partners that aid you in battle
+ alot of different Weapons and Items
+ Bowser Fights Along Side You!!
Cons
- Not very high replay value
Overall the game gets a
4.5/5. This game is a hidden gem so it's pretty hard to find. It has the same battle system as Paper Mario so fans of that game should definitely buy this game on the
Wii's Virtual Console.
