The World Ends With You: Review - 07-04-08

REVIEW:The World Ends With You

The World Ends With You for DS is an action-packed RPG published by Square Enix. The creators of the famed Final Fantasy series.
In this game the characters consist of the protagonist, Neku Sakuraba and an assortment of “Players” picked for the Game, a mysterious competition in which malicious Reapers attack as the frantic players must race to the completion of each daily task of the 7 day games allowing for the players success and resistance of erasure. Neku and his partner (who varies depending on what point you are in the game) must join forces together and erase the threatening Noise surrounding Shibuya while trying there best to complete the assigned tasks in the limited time granted in this excellent attempt at a new franchise by Square Enix.

Gameplay: The game play is simply outstanding and bursting with original ideas. The combat is done through innovative dual screen battling. The player must control both screens simultaneously while eliminating the Noise which come in a variety of forms. On the bottom screen, the touch screen controls Neku, which through collectable pins, which through various touch screen actions and blowing or talking into the microphone , can destroy the Noise.
Neku have a wide selection of pins containing various “psychs” or powers of which he can be activated individually through touch screen commands. The game offers over 300 pins which can be collected in the game. Each pin brings it’s own help to the table and can be upgraded through constant use. If you wish to really enjoy the game you should try to master every pin and gain a truly diverse and even more enjoyable experience. All of these pin’s psychs can be cleanly executed in the midst of a battle with top-notch touch screen responses. While you are busy controlling Neku in a battle, the top screen does not remain idle. You must also control the top screen using the A, B, X, Y, buttons or the control pad on your DS. This can allow for the game to be played with ease by both left-handed people and right-handed people. With these buttons you can smoothly dodge, jump and attack your enemies (depending on your selected partner at the time, actions may vary). The battle systems offers chaotic fast-paced fun for users to have a blast. For those that may regard this seemingly complex (battle system warily, they may make the level easier from available options created to control the difficulty ranging from easy to intense. Also, if controlling two screens is too much at first, you may allow the computer control the top screen while you concentrate on mastering Neku’s combat. Combat also includes many other specials such as an attack multiplier switching form screen to screen as the characters successfully complete a combo and a fusion of the characters, in which, through a brief cut scene, massive damage is done to all enemies present on the screens (this can be achieved by the collection of fusion stars that become available different ways depending on Neku’s partner) .Through innovative touch screen controls and original game play, the combat in The World Ends With You creates an awesome, addicting experience.
Outside of combat, the game offers an also extremely pleasurable experience. The game allows the player to explore Shibuya, level up characters through many stores through food and clothes merchandise, and completing tasks such as inserting ideas into people’s brains (similar to telekinesis but involves a cell phone) and insuring the popularity of a certain brand (done by using pins of that brand name in battle). Overall, the game features outstanding ideas and strong game play elements unlike any out there to date.
5/5

Graphics: Graphically the game is beautiful. Although some users may may question their ability to like the graphics through screen shots, once actually seeing them in the game, it is impossible not to appreciate the artistic quality of the graphics, yes, even if you’re a 3D fan. Shibuya’s buildings and characters are created in an artistically inspired way creating a colorful environment. This mixed with smooth animation makes this game’s graphics rather irresistible.
5/5

Storyline: If the original outstanding game play wasn’t enough of a reason for you to run to the store an purchase the game, the storyline provides enough excellence in itself. The characters are memorable and well developed in such a way you’d think you could only find in a novel. The deep storyline is intense and purely emotional at times due to excellent dialogue and magical instrumentals. The story contains messages about life, compelling mysteries, and unexpected plot twists. What more could you expect from a game? The story keeps you captivated to the last minute in this compelling masterpiece. The only complaint that could be had would be that the excessive but beautifully written dialogue may have invaded the gameplay a bit. Even so, it is impossible to ignore a good plot when you see one.
5/5

Sound: Characters have excellent voice acting but the most memorable part of the game’s sound would have to be the music. The music simply rocks. The track consists of a wide span of genres of music including rock, rap, hip-hop and instrumentals. The music is at such a high standard it could be considered equivalent to Zelda. All of these songs can be purchased through shops selling CD’s at stores. Some of these CD’s contain traditional Japanese music, that surprisingly is actually rather catchy, this can allow the player to experience some of the everyday music that could be heard in Shibuya. Overall the music quality is extremely high for the DS, as the instrumentals and voices come out very clearly. Whether or not you are a fan of any of the particular genres listed, there is bound to be at least one song you will find entertaining, if not many, as the music is definitely the best out there for the DS, with talented vocals and catchy beats. The sound for The World Ends With You fits perfectly with the rest of the brilliant package.
5/5

Longevity: The first time you play the game it should take as little as 12 hours. It’s a bit short. But don’t worry- the fun doesn’t stop there! The game offers many unlockable extras allowing the player to revisit completed Game days and accomplish selected extra tasks. After the main story ends, the fun doesn’t retire and the player can still get enjoyment out of the game.
4/5

BOTTOM LINE: The World Ends With You for DS incorporates exceptionally ideal and original game play elements, great graphics, a strong story, and a fairly long experience to enjoy. If you have a DS , this game is a must buy. It can’t be stressed any further, if you like any videogames at all you will be bound to find something you like in this great game by Square Enix.

o.o Nothing negative... All positive...

I disagree on the Graphics (4/5) and Longevity (3/5)

/5 isn't a good score measurement since you can't be very precise.

Good review overall.

After looking back on the review, I realized in order to be more precise and deliver a more accurate review, I think each category should be at least worth ten. I'll probably use that in future reviews.
