The Werehog was a ridiculous idea and I didn't have any hope for it at all.
That having been said, the platforming in those levels was often pretty good. In fact, I enjoyed various werehog levels such as Chu-Nan (also, the phoenix was an awesome boss). The werehog sections surprised me and exceeded my expectations. My problem with the werehog levels was that the action sections were kind of separate from the rest of the stage (the platforming sections) and kind of poorly implemented. You'd come to a certain part of the level and you'd be forced to fight certain generic enemies to proceed. In order to beat them, you would have to use fairly ordinary attacks over and over and over, maybe collecting rings occasionally to keep your health up. THIS was what sucked about the werehog levels. The actual levels were actually sometimes better designed than the daytime levels in my opinion. The fact that you could level up the werehog was also a neat little feature.
The enemies should have just been roaming around the level. They shouldn't have been forced encounters except for maybe a boss or miniboss here and there. If they were roaming around the level, that means there would have been less. That would have been fine too, and if there were less, maybe they wouldn't seem as generic. Moreover, they could have focused more on making some of them more difficult to beat.
I just am kind of confused as to why they decided to turn Sonic into a wolf. They should have just had Knuckles go through those levels, and there should have been less overall. I guess that would have killed the "Sonic only" thing, but still.
