But that's the thing, how much do you expect from your developers? that stuff costs massive cash, in order for it to exist, they need money, and in order to get that, well, they need to sell games!
The only exception to this would Burnout Paradise, but now that Burnout Paradise: the Ultimate Box is coming out, that's kind of voided.

I don't see why they can't run ads over and over to sell more copies; how is that any different from running ads for a sequel? And doesn't the "word of mouth" trick work? It seemed to work for Blizzard; maybe they could look to them for advice.

But GTA 4 is doing the same thing; without a sequel so why can't everyone else?

Re: Sequels: There really a point to them? - 02-19-09

I could go on for 3 paragraphs, but I'll give u the simple answer: Money

If u have a huge fanbase for a game, why keep continuing patching or expansions if u could make another game with the same name, knowing the current fan base would buy it in 2 seconds?

Btw, ur way off about Resistance. Is that really the ONLY thing u noticed? How about the fact u can't use more than 2 weapons, or have a regenerative life instead of a health bar (similar to modern shooters)? You think they could just magically patch in more players..? Not to mention a whole new cooperative mode, character development, a whole new story, etc. Maybe the modes, story, and weapons could fit in an expansion, but as for the gameplay; if ur gonna change that much of the core gameplay, why not make a new game? Yeah..

Also,

Sequel - a literary work, movie, etc., that is complete in itself but continues the narrative of a preceding work.

If you keep making expansion packs, and someone doesn't have the original, they have to fork out more cash to play the game that they want.
