Crash Bandicoot. I could never beat when I first got it at age 4. :S
First Xbox game was Burnout 3: Takedown. It was tough to stop playing it.

You're right about the different console generations, but they are both still the first system for Sony and Microsoft when they entered the video game market. ;o

Crash Bandicoot was the first PS1 game I really cared about, though I played a bunch of stupid license games before that.

As for the Xbox, I first got into Blinx. Beforehand, though, I played Shrek.
