Part one: Snowdog's MKDS school
Hello. In an effort to clean up some sticky post clutter, I have decided to make an mkds school of basic to advanced skills to go along with the "MKDS: threads you should see" thread. So, let's get this started.
Step One: The Basics
1.1- Rocket start: Getting a rocket start means boosting out of the starting line at the speed of a mushroom. It is a very important, yet very useful skill. To do it, start holding the "A" button as the "2" on the countdown starts to fade. It will work every time.
1.2- Drifting: Drifting is a skill that will open a lot of doors, as it is necesarry for using mini-turbos (1.3). To drift, hold the "R" button on a turn. You should glide across the turn. Lean left or right too stay on the inside of the turn as much as possible without leaving the road. Practice this at the massive turns at Figure Eight circuit. Eventually, you should be able to hold a drift for the entire turn. You have mastered basic drifting.
1.3- Mini Turbos- Now, here's the slightly more difficult part, although it is still a basic skill. Mini turbos are small rocket boosts that may be done while drifting. To do a mini turbo, start a drift. Then, press left on the control pad, followed by pressing right quickly. There should now be blue sparks coming out of your tires while you drift. Repeat, and you will get red sparks. Here is where you let go of the "R" button, ending the drift, and giving you a slight turbo boost. This is the most useful skill in the game, so practice it. Try getting as many mini turbos as possible on the massive turns at Figure Eight Circuit. Eventually, you will master mini turbos on turns.

Step Two: Race, Kart, and item strategy
2.1- Character Selection: What character shuld you use? Well, it pretty much doesn't m,atter. The only kart stat that your character effects is weight. Weight makes a minimal difference to your Kart's performance. So, pick your favorite character, or at least the one who's voice annoys you the least.
2.2- Kart selection: Now, on to kart choice. It is recommended that you get to the point in single player more that allows you to pick any character in any kart before continuing. It is reccomended (by me :p) that you use the Egg1 or the Dry Bomber. These two karts get the most acceleration and pretty good handling. Mkds's best use them. Some people, however, have found success with the Rob BLS and the various standard karts. Experiment, and pick your best kart.
2.3- Basic item strategy: I'm not going to get into very much detail on this, since you can just click below and see Naruto26's helpful thread. First, place stationary items (bannanas, fake items) right after turns. They will often take out un-aware opponents. Now, the following is an underhanded technique, but useful nonetheless. It's called sandbagging. Sandbagging is when you slow down or stop before an item box in order to let an opponent cut ahead of you, allowing you to get a better item. Remember one thing when sandbagging: NEVER come to a complete stop. If you do so, your opponent will gain more ground on you than a blue shell can make up, essentially throwing the race away. Only sandbag if your opponent is not very far back. As I said, this is an underhanded technique, and it may make you some enemies on the track.

Step Three: Non-snaking or Snaking?
3.1- Overview: Snaking is the succesive use of mini turbos on straight roads, drifting and using those turbos from left to right on a straight road, like a slithering snake. Since th staff ghosts on time trials don't partake in this techniquue, some racers have called it a glitch, saying the game programmers didn't put it in on prupose. So, they race non-snaking, which is only using mini turbos on turns. It's your choice. I am a snaker.
3.2- Snaking: See the video below
3.3- Non Snaking: To get more info on non-snaking, see Chaoszero's thread (linked below)

The other steps are coming soon. They include prb'ing, bsd'ing, and red shell dodging, as well as some other more advanced techniques. Stay tuned
