Okay, recently I've realized something: Every artist falls into one of three categories: Single, Album, or Live.
Single: These artists, which include Weird Al, Michael Jackson, and Miley Cyrus, focus on making a few songs that are catchy enough to get to #1 on the billboard chart reasonably quickly. This is oftentimes because they are aimed at the lowest common denominator. Their albums are normally a mess, featuring all their "best" work at the top and a load of junk at the bottom, or vice versa.
Album: These kinds of bands are my personal favorite. "Led" by rock and metal bands like Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, and Nine Inch Nails, these bands might produce a good single every decade or so, but you'll have to buy their CD to check out their best stuff. Unlike single artists, these albums are often incredibly well-balanced, with an eerie, attention-grabbing track opening it, and not letting you go until the end of the last song.
Live: These are sorta weird. Normally, these bands often are without a record label, so they're best known for creating elaborate shows that are a lot of fun. The most popular example of this is probably The Grateful Dead, where people go out of their way to attend ALL of their shows!
Of course, there are some artists that fall in multiple categories. Since the Beatles released most of their singles outside of their albums, they would obviously be like that. Pink Floyd basically invented the "concert musical" with it's The Wall tour.
So, guys, which of these three categories do you like the best?
