    Does the media affect you?

Alright, so in film I'm doing a documentary about how the media influences teenagers and children. So far we've looked at it more from a girl's perspective, and we're hoping to make it more balanced. I know there are more guys here, and I know that you probably fall into your own subcultures, but id like some general ideas. Girls, you can still answer, too.

You don't have to answer these, but they are ideas lol:

If you see a model wearing clothing, are you more inclined to buy it?
If you encounter ads endorsing alcohol, does it affect you?
What is your favourite brand of clothing?
Do you feel like the media has made you more self-conscious?
When you are out in the streets, do you feel bombarded by advertisements?
Do you wear clothing that you are uncomfortable wearing?
Does your friends' choices impact yours?
How much a year do you spend on clothing?
Do you think that ads endorse more negative things than positive?
    What's your favourite clothing store?
If your favourite celebrity endorsed something you normally would oppose, would you change your mind?
    Describe the perfect teenager (male)
Does the media make you doubt yourself?

For those whom do not feel affected:
Do you think that ads have impacted society in a negative way?
Why do you not feel under pressure from them?

    Everyone:
What subculture do you belong to?

Re: Does the media affect you?

Well, depending on the utility of the product, TV show, game, etc. If I was watching an classic addicting according to the one stated above, I'll rather waste my time. Depending on the certain words used by the cast members or voice actors then it would be furious, assume something you hate that is good is wrong, depending on the way the fan or user relates them in their judgement and opinion. The way the media affects the person is based on the circumstances of what way do that person lives. If you're have a strong dislike for something you began to love that is good; then you're will hate it later on, recommended on your options.
q: If you're have a strong love for certain media that is addicting, a: you'll miss it in the future but is unnecessary to the viewer's eye. q: Lets say if a video game you bought or play was hard in the beginning, a: would you really want to continue? q: If you're want to sell a video game that becomes harder to complete? a: Would you want to make the wrong choice? q: If you're spend countless mins to good music, a: would you feel bad? q: If you're knew a good show with a small list of episodes? a: who would watch it? q: if you buy a show on dvd? a: wouldn't you care about your goal?

Re: Does the media affect you?

I acknowledge media, but I really don't get influenced or anything.

If you see a model wearing clothing, are you more inclined to buy it?
No, not unless I think the clothing is really cool or something I would like and wear alot.
If you encounter ads endorsing alcohol, does it affect you?
Nope. I pay no attention what so ever.
What is your favourite brand of clothing?
I like anything with rock or metal like Slayer. I enjoy the Tripp brand clothing.
Do you feel like the media has made you more self-conscious?
No, but I know people who have suffered from it.
When you are out in the streets, do you feel bombarded by advertisements?
Do you wear clothing that you are uncomfortable wearing?
No never. I wear what I enjoy.
Does your friends' choices impact yours?
    Sometimes.
How much a year do you spend on clothing?
No idea. I usually go for the stuff that's on sale to save money however.
Do you think that ads endorse more negative things than positive?
Yes, I would agree there's more negative then positive.
    What's your favourite clothing store?
    Hot Topic.
If your favourite celebrity endorsed something you normally would oppose, would you change your mind?
    No I wouldn't.
    Describe the perfect teenager (male)
There's no such thing as perfect. :w I suppose I could try though, a guy who doesn't think of himself and doesn't do drugs or alchol.
Does the media make you doubt yourself?
In the past it has. But not really anymore.
For those whom do not feel affected:
Do you think that ads have impacted society in a negative way?
Why do you not feel under pressure from them?
Yes they have. I do not feel under pressure because I'm one of those people who really mind their own business, and I focus on what's going on with me. Not other stuff.
    Everyone:
What subculture do you belong to?
    Not entirely sure.

Re: Does the media affect you?

For those whom do not feel affected:
Do you think that ads have impacted society in a negative way?
Funny thing is this is the main theme for my English class.

Anyway, ads do play a heavy role on society, but sometimes the one to blame is ourselves.
A man by the name of Jib Fowles wrote a short essay on adverts and how they appeal, around post war time I do believe, he stated that there are 15 basic appeals. Those appeals are:
    1. The need for sex
    2. The need for affiliation
    3. The need to nurture
    4. The need for guidence
    5. The need to agress
    6. The need to achieve
    7. The need to dominate
    8. The need for prominence
    9. The need for attention
    10. The need for autonomy
    11. The need to escape
    12. The need to feel safe
    13. The need for aesthetic sensation
    14. The need to satisfy curiosity
    15. Physiological needs

Now some of the appeals mentioned on this list can't be blamed, like the last one for example. We need food and other necessities. Curiosity is on the border line and can be blamed on either side. Everything above that however can be mostly blamed by the developers of the ads. They play with the human mind, implying things like: "If you don't buy such and such product you won't be as cool as this guy depicted in this ad" or something along the lines. Then we come into play, how well we can control our own subconscious. Ads are basically peer pressure only capitalized.
Now one thing is for certain is that people shouldn't deprive themselves of products because. Sometimes we need the new things, if our stuff breaks down and what not, and certainlly if you don't buy anything how will you survive.(not buying any food because it was on an ad as an example.)
It's all about self-control. So really we can't just blame it on the advertisements and the people who made them, we also have to blame our selves for giving into the pressure and buy that margarita maker with the salsa dispenser.

Why do you not feel under pressure from them?
It's because to me As long as I have something like it, I don't need it.
I have a laptop and a computer that are at least 4 yrs or older. They work fine so I don't bother to buy a new one until both of them finally can no longer operate. I don't care if people have the latest do-dads. I may buy a new video game system here and there, but that's only If I haven't spent much. I have a monthly budget for leisure, which is 50$. I buy whatever I want for the month with that 50$.

Re: Does the media affect you?

I'll help you out Sarah. I love these kinds of things, haha.

If you see a model wearing clothing, are you more inclined to buy it?
Not really. I usually pick my clothing on my own personal taste. The only exception is if I see something I already like, being worn by someone else, then I may want it more.

If you encounter ads endorsing alcohol, does it affect you?
No. I don't like alcohol, and I don't plan on drinking it when I'm of age.

What is your favourite brand of clothing?
Whatever covers me, haha. I do like Aeropstale, but it's not crucial to my existence that I have it.

Do you feel like the media has made you more self-conscious?
Not necessarily. I'm comfortable with me as me, and don't tend to change what I think I should be because of others. For example, I like to stay in good shape, but I also don't run to the gym just because the guy on the TV has uber abs.

When you are out in the streets, do you feel bombarded by advertisements?
Probably, yes. It seems advertisements are everywhere these days, it's hard to escape their view.

Do you wear clothing that you are uncomfortable wearing?
That's kind of an odd question, but no. If I don't want to wear it, then, I just don't.

Does your friends' choices impact yours?
It depends really. I can occasionally be swayed if something they have looks nice (usually it's not clothes, it'd be more like games, or other hobby-related items), I may look into it,

How much a year do you spend on clothing?
I've never really payed attention, but not much. I only buy new clothes when my old stuff starts wearing out. I have enough to cover formal, casual and work clothes, so I just get new when I need to replace something else.

Do you think that ads endorse more negative things than positive?
It depends on the add, but I'd say more negative. The media seems to have a view of what "cool" is as of now, and it usually is far from what's practical or necessary.

    What's your favourite clothing store?
    Target, Walmart, etc.

If your favourite celebrity endorsed something you normally would oppose, would you change your mind?
Most likely no, but I won't say that it would never happen.

    Describe the perfect teenager (male)
Me. Haha, just kidding. There is no such thing as a perfect teenager. You're doing pretty well if you put your responsibilities ahead of your personal desires, put others interests in front of your own, and try to improve yourself daily. There is no way to be "perfect" though.

Does the media make you doubt yourself?
No, never. I know who I am, I'm happy with it, and the media is certainly not going to tell me otherwise.

Does the media make you doubt yourself?
    Sometimes

For those whom do not feel affected:
Do you think that ads have impacted society in a negative way?
Depends what the ad is really and if you buy the product or whatever it's sponsoring.
Why do you not feel under pressure from them?
They're not very important or necessities.

    Everyone:
What subculture do you belong to?
    Not sure

Did this because I was bored. So the answers probably suck.
