"Michael Fassenbender of ”X-Men: First Class,” “Shame,” “Haywire,” and “Prometheus” will star in the upcoming feature-length movie adaptation of Assassins Creed — one of the best selling video game franchises of all time, reports Variety. The Assassins Creed movie had been announced last year and is expected to be released sometime in 2014. Fassenbender will also co-produce the Assassins Creed film.
Assassin’s Creed is a widely beloved video-game franchise about a bartender, Desmond Miles, who learns he is the ancestor of a group of elite assassins who fight evil forces and regimes throughout history. Versions of the series have been set during the Crusades and the Renaissance. The newest edition, set to come out on October 30, uses the American Revolution as a backdrop.
The Assassin’s Creed series has sold over 30 million copies of the games.
“Michael Fassbender was our first choice” to headline the adaptation, said Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Paris-based Ubisoft Motion Pictures to Variety. “Michael (Fassbender) is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor.”
Ubisoft had been in negotiations with Sony late last year to work on a series of Assassin’s Creed films. Those talks since ended, so Ubisoft executives now plan to develop the film independently so that they can retain creative control.
Sony may end up distributing the film, but Ubisoft Motion Pictures will hire a writer and director before continuing to negotiate with the studio.
“We’re open to re-discuss with the key studios once the production package is finalized,” Baronnet told Variety.
The video game to movie switch hasn’t been easy for many actors, renowned or not. Mark Wahlberg took a shot at Max Payne. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson fell flat in Doom. Jake Gyllenhaal’s Prince of Persia was forgettable. Hopefully the prolific and red-hot Fassenbender will be able to buck the trend."
