Need Some Help With GIMP!

Well, When I try to save a picture, It says this " Unknown File Type " and some other stuff about the save failed and all. Why is it doing this? Also, How do I insert A Fractal for a backround on my Image?

With most, try doing Save As then save it as .jpeg instead and it should work, some files will open but won't save in most programs.

I save all my sigs as .xcf, and then .png, .xcf is so that you can edit it later, and .png is for uploading.
