I made a mario themed chess game before allow me to show you what I did:

Koopas

Pawn: Goombas
Rook: Bomb-Ombs
Knights: Boo
Bishop: Bowser Jr
King: Bowser
Queen: Birdo

Mushroom

Pawn: Toads
Rook: Peach's Castle
Knights: Yoshi
Bishop: Piantas
King: Mario
Queen: Peach

[Hiroko]

Rooks could be Koopas (they ARE a step up from Goombas)...
Knights could be Piranha Plants (in pipes or not)...
Bishops could be Hammer Bros...
Kings could totally be Bowser. I haven't an idea for a Queen... Possibly Birdo?
That's what I have.

Shouldn't Mario be the Queen piece and Peach be the King? Because the King piece is the one piece the other side is trying to capture and the Queen piece is one of the more maneuverable pieces.

That's what I have.

Those are some good Idea's. I forgot about hammer bros. I also think Yoshi's would make good Knights. I think that maybe Shyguys could fit in somewhere. But where?

Queen for the Koopas should be Wendy O. Koopa, Birdo is not part of the Koopa race, also, she is on the good side. (except in Super Mario Bros. 2)

Yeah, I'll Probably end up using Mario and Peach as the King and Queen. They might be a bit complicated for the rough clay I use but I should manage.
