Spirtes are hand pixellated (usually) by artists (such as my self) and they can be used in most 2D games. IE: these are sprites. For example, ever pokemon or moving piece you've seen in a Pokemon game, each image is a sprite. Which leads me to the best thing about sprites. Sprites can be used with similar sprites to create a moving image such as this:
But I can't really see a Spriting contest since not a lot of users sprite anymore :/
