There's A New Challenger Approaching! - 12-13-08

Surprise, or not a surprise, Apple has stepped to Sony and Nintendo. One Apple Director of Technology Evangelism, John Geleynse, had made one bold statement that may blow the Handheld race open to Apple.

"It's not a phone, it's a console experience,"

Geleynse...

It's just a phone with games! all phones have games. you can't compare it to a game console.

Re: There's A New Challenger Approaching!

You can't compare the iPod with the DS. They are two completely different subjects. The iPod is for Music, while the DS is for video games. The main reason people by an iPod is for music, while the DS is bought for a gaming experience. Obviously the amount of gamers is little compared to average people wanting to listen to music. I know that this has nothing to with the article, but I just wanted to say that. Anyway, the fact that Apple's trying to get into the video game business is probably a smart move for them. Now whether they do well or not is not something I would know at this time.

Thumbs down Re: There's A New Challenger Approaching!

Sooooo, now phones are suppose to count as handhelds? Last time I checked phones were phones and i couldnt call up my friends on my DS, so thats not a phone, so a phone must not be a handheld, but then again im CRAZY, so i must think outside the box on this one. Also, I believe a small, hardly remember device called an N-Gage tried to do this same thing and I believe we all remember its fate. So, lets just skip straight to the end of this, shall we? Nintendo CAN NOT be beaten in handhelds, don't try. Sega, Atari, and Sony have all tried and can't compete. And if Apple were to come close, they stole the same touch screen technology so it doesnt count. Let's keep it simple, phones are phones, handhelds are handhelds, and computers are computers. Let's try to keep those boundaries simple and i think we will all find things to be a little easier.

Re: There's A New Challenger Approaching!

I doubt the sales would be good. People will go "oh, it's more of a gaming system?" and then just shrug. The casual players just pick up a DS or PSP for either the library or multiple uses they have, and while the same will hold true with this new product, it will fail when you think about the hardcore crowd. I've seen a lot of casual gamers play a PSP, but I've seen way more hardcore gamers play a DS. What library will Apple have for it's gaming system? What 3rd party developers are going to make games for this product? How are they going to utilize the system's functions to get the most out of games. Heck, Nintendo's already catching on to the idea that people like to trash talk each other online, so they've come up with the Wii Speak channel and perpheial (sp?) thingy.

While I don't doubt they can MAKE the system, I doubt how they can sell, work, and use it to their advantage. The casual market isn't going to hold them up; the iPhone, DS, and PSP already do what this thing does, but the thing is that most people already have at least two of those, so why bother with a combined system when you already can do whatever it does?
