Metallica has shown a significant amount of love for the Guitar Hero franchise over the years by signing quite a number of their own songs into the respective titles. Shortly before the release of Guitar Hero World Tour, Activision announced that the next in the series would be centered around the music of Metallica. Following in the footsteps of Guitar Hero Aerosmith before it, Guitar Hero Metallica will feature a large range of songs from Metallica's history as well as a collection of bands that Metallica was somehow involved with. As with World Tour, Guitar Hero Metallica will feature play with the drum and microphone peripherals. Exclusive to Guitar Hero Metallica however is a new difficulty specifically for the drums called Expert+, which uses two kick pedals instead of the one.
