Last week, during a Q&A session at Nintendo's earnings briefing, Shigeru Miyamoto expressed his interest in cats. An investor asked Miyamoto various questions regarding the game in development he's currently most involved in, and, as usual, they decided not to speak about it.
However, nearly the end of the session, Shiggy stated:

Also, I've recently been caring for cats. That is all.

To what Iwata added:
Could this mean a Nintendogs like game based on cats? These statements could well be a joke, so don't hold your breath.
On a side note, they also discussed to ways of gaming they are focusing into: A
DS game for playing at home and one for public spaces. He states that there's a lot of people who uses the
DS at home, but that thanks to Dragon Quest IX's "sure chigai" information exchange functionality, which lets you change data with others around the street while keeping your
DS in sleep mode (Much like MPH's rival seeker), there's more people who carry their
DS around. So they are currently exploring unique possibilities in this area.
Also, Nintendo will finally introduce game demos for WiiWare titles, probably sometime this month. It was about time! According to Iwata, WiiWare sales haven't been that good yet, so this might help gamers get involved with the
Wii Shop Channel.
