It was recently announced that the Nintendo 3DS will not have a feature the popular PictoChat messaging system, or any instant messaging features at all. PictoChat, which came with the original DS, DS Lite, and DSi, allows players to connect wirelessly and chat through text and drawings. The Wii also has the Message Board, which allows users to send what were essentially emails to people on their friends list. These two features came with the consoles, and it is sad to see no new iteration PictoChat for the new 3DS.
This isn't to say that the 3DS will be forever without messaging. Bill Trinen, Product Marketing Manager at Nintendo of America, thinks there could be a messaging feature added in the future stating that, "The goal is that there will be some messaging functions."
Though there doesn't seem to be a hope for PictoChat, it is worth looking at other features such as the eShop and the internet browser, which will not be available at launch but will become available shortly after with an update. There are many features with the 3DS that are worth noting, and though there are a variety of gamers that love social networking, there are also many gamers that would rather just play games.
