A few days ago, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) started a campaign criticizing the return of the Tanooki suit in Super Mario 3D Land. Many Mario fans were furious with the news. However, PETA confirmed that it was all a joke.
Eurogamer got a hold of PETA who had this to say:
"Mario fans: Relax!" The organisation said that its spoof flash game - Mario Kills Tanooki - was "meant to be tongue-in-cheek, a fun way to call attention to a serious issue, that raccoon dogs are skinned alive for their fur."
Since the campaign began, PETA said that it was very surprised on the reaction of the Mario fans. Many people wonder why PETA would even make a joke criticizing the Tanooki suit. But apparently that's all it was, just a joke.
