On the 2nd of July Square-Enix officially announced the remake of the golden child of the RPG era: Chrono Trigger. They stated that Chrono Trigger DS will be an enhanced version of the SNES original and will be released this holiday season. They also said that the game will “maintain all of the game’s original elements”. The DS version will additionally sport an entirely new dungeon and an online mode in which you can battle each other. This is amazing news for the RPG fan as the game is widely considered to be one of the best RPG’s of all time. Not to forget the fact that European audiences never got the chance to play this game. The original version was only released in North American and Japanese regions.
Naturally the game will make use of the DS’ unique capabilities such as the use of touch screen and the dual screens. The game implements the Active Time Battle (ATB) system from the Final Fantasy series. This is, very simply put, a system in which you can only have a character perform a move after a certain gauge is filled, the ATB gauge. We know from screens and gameplay videos that the game is completely set in 2D. It is still unclear whether any 3D effects are in the game.
Square-Enix recently launched an English mini site for the game. There you can watch a short video about the game. It features some in-game action shots and the expected release period: winter 2008.
Previous statements by the director of Chrono Trigger, Takashi Tokita, already hinted at the possibility of a Chrono Trigger remake.
Takashi Tokita regarding Chrono Trigger remake: “Chrono Trigger was a no-holds-barred, swashbuckling adventure that was a lot of fun to work on," said Tokita. "If the demand is great enough, it's certainly possible.”
After the success of the Final Fantasy III remake and now Final Fantasy IV, it was more a matter of time until the game was officially announced.
A short synopsis of the story: Crono, the main protagonist, must travel through time to rescue his friend, who was teleported back in time because of a time machine malfunction. While on his journey Crono meets unexpected difficulties and ends up altering the course of history and the outcome of the future. Crono travels to the past, present and future to repair the world’s chronology and restore the order of time. Apart from the amazing story the game features multiple story endings.
Chrono Trigger stole the hearts of many gamers when it was released on the Super Nintendo Entertaining System (SNES) in 1995. Then later it was ported to the Playstation. This version included animated cut scenes. The long awaited sequel debuted in 1999 on the Playstation with the title Chrono Cross. The sequel, overall, received positive reactions.
So set your chronographs for winter ’08! When more information about the remake is released, this is the first place you’ll find it. Let’s finish with some screens again this time.
