John Carmack Of Id Software Comments On Wii and DS

Id Software is responsible for a number of games, but most famously the 'Quake' and 'Doom' series'. The recent QuakeCon 2008 gave John Carmack, the lead programmer of Id Software, a chance to express his opinions on the current console market, more exclusively that of the Wii. At the press conference, Carmack had this to say about him and his son, Ryan:

"Right now we're on Super Paper Mario, and we have two more pure hearts to go. We've played a lot of Mario games, and it's been great. I even went out and bought an old 8-bit Nintendo to play the original Super Mario in its original form. It's wonderful what Nintendo is doing where you can still get that old game on the Wii or DS and its much nicer with cooler graphics."

John also said how he and his son "..play a lot of Mario Kart and Super Mario Brothers [on DS], but he usually has me play the hard levels."

When asked if we'll see any games put out on the Wii by Id Software, John said, "The Wii is one of those markets where Nintendo owns both the hardware and the software, but part of that is because they make such damn good products. So it's the toughest platform for third party developers. We don't have a software or content base ideally suited for it. So it doesn't really play to our strengths and we're pretty busy with other stuff right now."

Finally, John said he was "..thrilled that Nintendo has had this kind of success because they took some risky bets, and it's always nice some bold thinking pay off for them. But I don't think we'll be on the platform."

I believe John's right here. Nintendo recently stated at E3 how 19 third-party Wii games have sold more than 400,000 units, but at the Wii's launch, 'The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess' sold 700,000 copies, not to mention the copies it's sold since. So maybe certain third party companies should stick to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 where they belong?

We (the hardcore gamer) dont want 3rd party games cause they suck, the same goes with casual games, they are horrible and have absolutely no replay value and are way to easy. Back in the NES games and when Megaman was good it took skill to get pass the first level, now they just give everything to you.

Being a huge Resident Evil fan, I have to disagree. Comapanies like Capcom and Valve can make amazing games, but most of the third-party companies which make Wii/DS games do tend to suck.

hey dont forget that it was games like OKAMI and others that make the WII great. There are good third party games out there. though there are many bad ones that just plainly suck

Hey, at least someone finally gets it right! But who knows? We still have another 4 years at the least until the next console comes out. That is a long time for 3rd Parties to join in!

I disagree that the Wii is no place for 3rd party games. Obviously TLOZ is going to sell a lot of copies, it was the only game out for the release and is a great game no matter who made it. I'm greatly looking forward to The Conduit from High Voltage, I just don't think that enough third parties take the Wii seriously.

ID Software is in my opinion second only to Square Enix. (Though like Shadowhedgehog said, I'm not sure if Square is a 3rd party or not. I'm not sure how that works either.) I think ID should remake the Commander Keen series for the DS. It's not a hardcore game but the a lot of the DS fans aren't hardcore gamers right? I consider myself a moderate gamer, huge fan of the Final Fantasy series, but I'd buy it. A lot of people used to enjoy it on the PC and Gameboy Color.

Activision made call of duty 4, not Atari! And since Activision is a big company (guitar Hero, Call of Duty, etc.) It is not 3rd party.
