Super Mario RPG and SMB: The Lost Levels make their way to Virtual Console
With the newest Virtual Console update PAL users can finally play the highly anticipated SNES classic Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Seeing as this game never saw daylight in European (and Australian) regions unless you imported the North American or Japanese version, this game comes as a godsend for the fans of Role Playing Games and Nintendo alike. As a collaboration between SquareSoft and Nintendo, Super Mario RPG is a mix of the Mario universe and many RPG elements, which, surprisingly, worked out great together.
The game’s plot in a nutshell: Mario once again travels to Bower’s Castle to rescue Princess Peach when suddenly a colossal sword crashes into the castle and sends Mario, Bowser and Peach flying, all into different places. From then on it’s Mario’s task to recover Princess Peach, find out why a huge sword smashed into the castle and, more importantly, who or what caused the sword to crash.
Another amazing title that released together with Super Mario RPG is Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. This time around European gamers can play the original NES version as it was meant to be played, so without the exclusion of World 9 and difficulty cuts as seen in previous re-releases of the game. For those confused, as the game was already released in September last year, now the game is here to stay permanently on Virtual Console, because last time it was only available for a couple of weeks to purchase. Again, this applies only to PAL regions.
Lost Levels features the most difficult stages in Mario (and arguably gaming-) history. Players will have to perform pixel-perfect jumps to cross these atrocious levels and show more patience than a saint. Expect your sanity to be stripped from you after you enter certain levels more hellish than Dante’s travels, namely Worlds A-D. If you’re in for a serious task, this is the game for you.
Super Mario RPG and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels will cost 900 Wii Points and 600 Wii Points, respectively. As of now it is unclear whether Super Mario RPG will make its way to North American Virtual Console, but expect it to be soon.
