Activision currently hold the top spot for best selling third party
Wii titles and this is a reason why. Despite the limitations of the
Wii that some developers are treating like a reason to slap together inferior ports (I'm looking at you EA), Activision is setting a new bar for developers by trying their best to give the
Wii a game that can stand up to the HD counterparts.
I am of course referring to the new Call of Duty game, and while Call of Duty 3 may have been a total drop for the
Wii, Call of Duty: World at War seems to be taking the Guitar Hero World Tour route and is pushing the
Wii as much as possible.
First of all, Call of Duty: World at War will support use of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for online death matches. According to the source, the
Wii version will feature the same maps, vehicles, and modes as the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game. A new 2-player mode called
"Squad Mate Mode", lets 2 players co-operate by adding another set of cross-hairs to the screen, allowing 2 players to shoot.
Another somewhat exciting detail is that the same engine for the HD editions will be used on the
Wii version to, which means the game will look very pretty. Activision has also revealed that due to some technical constraints for the
Wii in terms of shading effects, they have needed to tinker with the hardware to get the game to look just right on the
Wii, which shows they are dedicated to making the
Wii version look as good as possible. In addition, explosions and other special effects are said to look identical on all versions of the game without any frame rate drops.
Finally, pointer sensitivity, which was a major issue in Call of Duty 3, has been refurbished and will work a lot better in Call of Duty: World at War.
“Our controls are more customizable than any Wii FPS shooter has ever been. Our default control sensitivity has a dead zone and look sensitivity that is very flexible and intuitive, and designed so that anyone can pick up the control and have an enjoyable game experience. Beyond that, we offer customization of the dead zone size and sensitivity, the turning speed, and adjusting the speed of acceleration of the crosshairs”.
Activision and High Voltage Software are doing God's work for us. Let's hope more developers adapt this trend. Call of Duty: World at War is due out this year.
