This year Nintendo received numerous awards at the CEDEC Awards ceremony. The awards presentation was held for the first time this year during the CEDEC, the Japanese counterpart of the Game Developers Conference, for those of you unaware.
These awards were handed out to developers that stood out in the following categories: game design, programming, sound and visual arts. The awards were only applicable to games released prior to March 31st this year and covered any game previously released. After general nominations, which closed June 30th, a special advisory panel of the CESA narrowed the list of nominees down and together with this year’s CEDEC presenters voted for the final contestants. The winners would then be announced on Wednesday the 10th in Tokyo, Japan during the convention.
Nintendo stood out as the great winner of the awards, bringing home three awards, of which was Shigeru Miyamoto’s ‘Special Award’ in recognition of his outstanding work at Nintendo and his general influence in the whole game industry.
Nintendo's Takashi Tezuka and Koji Kondo were at the ceremony to receive Nintendo’s awards. The game design award went to Super Mario Bros., which beat the likes of Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, Virtua Fighter and more. The award for sound went to the Zelda series. One of the competing rivals was the critically acclaimed Gran Turismo franchise. Miyamoto’s hand in Nintendo’s awards was greatly felt as both Super Mario Bros. and Zelda were a product of his imagination.
Capcom’s MT Framework engine; implemented in Lost Planet, Devil May Cry 4 and the to-be-released Resident Evil 5; received the programming award. The visual arts award went to Sony’s ICO. The game was renowned for its uniqueness and proved to be a great influence in the industry.
Lets hope Nintendo will do even better next year with great titles around the corner, such as Zelda, Animal Crossing and
Wii Music.
