As most of you know, Guitar Hero IV will be a game featuring a considerable amount of downloadable content ranging from individual songs to complete albums. The topic of whether the
Wii would receive the same DLC treatment as the Xbox 360 and PS3 version was a heavily discussed item both on forums and, most likely, also at Activision. The Friendcodes system proved to be atrocious for easy online play and combined with the
Wii’s limited memory capacity downloadable content for the system would seem to be out of the question. Not so long ago it was announced that the
Wii would get downloadable content, but it was rather unclear on how this would work. Now, however, Activision’s CEO, Mike Griffith said the following about the feature:
"Looking even further out, we're exploring new models, like an annual pass subscription where players can subscribe and get a certain number of songs downloadable each month."
Sounds good, but will we be able to store this on our SD cards? Most gamers already have a lot of other content saved such as numerous saved game data, Virtual Console games, etcetera. All we know is that either we’ll have to free up some space or they might come up with an ingenious solution. Until then we can only speculate.
Some other quotes, not regarding the DLC service:
"We've learned that the consumer still has an insatiable appetite for more. Consumers have downloaded over 20 million individual songs for the franchise, and they still tell us they want more." "In fact, the Guitar Hero: Aerosmith game delivered 10x the revenue compared to Aerosmith's most recently released CD in 2004, when comparing equivalent launch periods."
Conclusively, Mike Griffith said that we can expect twice as much Guitar Hero games in 2009 en even three times as much in 2010.
Activision will probably release more games based on individual bands and alternate between the ‘standard’ Guitar Hero and the ‘band’ Guitar Hero. Either way, expect to rock out in the future, with or without extra content.
