Sony and Microsoft to drop out of console race next generation? -
09-27-08
This is no hard evidence that a PS4 or new Xbox console will be non-existent, but the figures expressed here are worth taking into account. Alex St. John, CEO & Founder of WildTangent (a PC game network), seems to think that after the PS3 and Xbox 360 have come to an end, Microsoft and Sony...

Re: Sony and Microsoft to drop out of console race next generation?
That would stink if they dropped out, but maybe more developers would work with Nintendo. PC gaming, as I have heard, can be very enjoyable, and a possible alternative to Microsoft to solely focus on, but for those who don't own their own PC, it would be terrible for them to only have NIntendo as an option. Nintendo would basically have a monopoly and whether or not you liked their next system, you'd be inclined to purchase it.
What's really depressing is, that in truth, the Wii is not the most well-rounded system, it's solely because their price, its advertising, its attractively unique approach at controls, and appeal to the casual gaming audience that they do so well.
I somehow doubt Microsoft will drop out, if they create a system that doesn't break down, they will rule the gaming market. As for Sony, well, they're more into general entertainment (Blu-ray and such). Consoles may not be their best choice unless they learn from their experiences and can create a more realistically priced unit with a wider selection of exclusives.

Re: Sony and Microsoft to drop out of console race next generation?
"Sony says we’re not making another for ten years, which is code for we can never make back the billions we lost on PS3, let alone convince our executives to make one again."
This is a stupid comment by this guy. Just because Sony said they won't make a console in ten years doesn't mean they aren't going to make another console at all. I think we will be seeing a PS4 in the future. As for Mircosoft, I really don't care if they make another console or not (but I really hope they don't cause the Xbox sucks)

It's not because Sony and Microsoft haven't got enough money to make a new console, it's because the PS3 and Xbox 360 have both so far costed more to make than what they are selling. If a company's product is not making them money, they stop making it.
I honestly think a PS4 will surface in about 7 years or so (possibly sooner if the PS3 sales don't pick up), since the Playstation brand has proven to be a massive money maker up until this generation. The Xbox however has never been profitable. Microsoft lost billions with the original Xbox, and lost even more with the Xbox 360. Unless Microsoft want to risk losing even more, I suggest they stick to PC. I think Sony and Nintendo will compete next generation, with Apple joining the ranks only to get totally smashed by them both.

Let's hope so. People are idiots these days. Just because an apple may look good, they'll buy it. Gaming now appeals to a wider audience, therefore, Apple could have a chance

Re: Sony and Microsoft to drop out of console race next generation?
I doubt there is any truth to that article on Gamer.Blorge. True, It might be longer then four years before we see the next gen of consoles, but with the large amount of cash flow the video game industry sees, I highly doubt these companies will drop out of the business entirely.
We' ll most likely see a more down-to-earth PS come out of Sony, thats for sure. ;)

Re: Sony and Microsoft to drop out of console race next generation?
no, nintendo will not be able to reproduce the success of wii if they dont bring somehting just as new and exciting as WII was for this generation. Sony may not be able to carry on but i believe microsoft will due to the fact they wont walk them selves into the red lights debacle again and they make money off it to begin with

Re: Sony and Microsoft to drop out of console race next generation?
I hope a Nintendo Console isn't the only console in the future, I love my Wii for my (mostly) casual and my PS3 for (mostly) hardcore, if I had only one of the two I'd go nuts..
But hey, maybe Sony and Microsoft can say, "Hey, Nintendo's owning us. Lets work together to surpass them!" Then make the PlayStation X or something xD Best Graphics, Free Online (hopefully) and awesome ips, and best of all.. no more (360/PS3) fanboys!

Wait a minute, that's a bad thing. If Sony and Microsoft drop out of the console race, wouldn't Nintendo then would have a monopoly over household video game consoles. As I type this, I think worse and worse of it. Nintendo is already making crappy games for the Wii. With no-one to compete with, the quality of the next console's games are going to be in the toilet.
|
No, it's a great thing. Think about it. Every game developer from all around will move to the Wii, because it'll be the one developing new systems, and new possibilities. The appeal of the console's potential to game producers will be almost magnetic, and that's a great thing, indeed. Sony's gonna come up with a new system, anyways, because they can't just keep on losing money over the PS3 forever. Either that, or they'll stop producing them. But think about it, having so many different developers/producers come to Nintendo? I would pee my pants in joy.
