Are Sony and Microsoft really stealing ideas from Nintendo? - 06-17-2008

This is turning into a bit of a problem I think. On the front page articles, mostly the latest ones posted like the Microsoft releasing Mii like avatars for the Xbox 360, fanboys have been flaming at each other because Microsoft (and Sony) is apparently copying Nintendo's ideas and Nintendo should...

Re: Are Sony and Microsoft really stealing ideas from Nintendo?

I say " Ripping off " is far too strong. Sony and Microsoft is just following a trend that Nintendo has found to be effective, nothing to sue over. I do belive though the things mentioned were proabaly inspired of nintendos works, but c'mon, these things have been in production from months to years, so really these ideas may have been made before the wii became popular.

Also take this example.

The first videogame, was the person who made the second ripping off the person who made the first. U decide.

I disagree. Nintendo (to my knowlege) doesn't actually have a patent on the wii-remote. They have a patent on the trigger B-button.

great point. i agree this site really is too nintendo savvy and it's starting to get annoying. I love this site but i like my xbox much better than the wii. Also people need to understand that if microsoft or sony tries to "copy" nintendo's services it doesnt really matter. nintendo was not the first company to come up with those ideas. Please for the love of god stop hating on microsoft and sony.

Good thing you made this thread, Budge..
Lot's of kids get this thing wrong by just reading headlines and making their own oppinions based on bits and pieces of information, instead of looking at the whole picture..

It's pretty clear to be true that Nintendo don't own the patent for the wireless function, but as far as the motion tracking accelerator built in the WiiMote, is an entirely different story..
And I'm NOT going to embark on THAT quest..! Heheh..

I doubt very much that such a game would release on the Xbox 360 and PS3 only. Besides that, the Tony Hawk balance board will probably only be good for Tony Hawk games, since it's a device created by Activison and NOT Microsoft and Sony themselves. How many 3rd party companies are willing to go through another 3rd party company so they can use their balance board for a separate companies console? Yep, it's a definate Wii Balance Board killer.

Mii's are NOT an original idea. Where are you people getting this?

I haven't seen any physical proof that this is real. Despite that, you seem to think that Microsoft and Sony making a motion sensing control will hurt Nintendo. Regardless of what kinds of intuitive controls these systems use, the Wii will not lose sales because it is much cheaper and has a much larger range of casual games that use the controller. For Sony and Microsoft to catch up, they'd need to cover A LOT of ground by advertising to casual gamers, lowering their prices and of course, making casual games that use the remote. Do you see all of that happening anytime soon?

Re: Are Sony and Microsoft really stealing ideas from Nintendo?

I'm mixed on this 1. Yes Microsoft & Sony are following Ninty's bandwagon, but how much of it is actually original work by Sony or Microsoft? lol.. i can see it now: Avatar parades on XboxLive.. At some point people need to think for themselves & get their own ideas.. & to your comment about Yahoo Avatars: That is completely irrelavant seeing as how Miis are nothing like the Yahoo avatars. I really hope i'm not sounding like a fanboy here.. I had a Ps1, xbox but they died long time ago. And yes, Xbox did 'help' nintendo to see how wi-fi would work with games well BUT with the mass of wi-fi enabled devices these days *and during development of the wii & ds* who's to say the idea wasn`t purely self-generated? I just think that there is less & less pure originality in the gaming world today and if people get too lazy to think up their own ideas *goes for Nintendo too* the industry will see a similar collapse like it did with the Atari 2600..
