I saw a post in another section about when did you get your DS and it made me think of when I got my 3DS and why it took me so long to get one.
Unfortunately for me the 3DS came out during a time in my life when I not only had no disposable income but not even enough to survive living on my own. I ended up having to share a 2 bedroom apartment with 5 people, only one of which was a friend, all in similar situations. It wasn't until late last year that I was able to afford living on my own and have a bit of surplus money to throw into savings. Fortunately this was also when the 3DS, something I had been pining over ever since its release, had its price drastically reduced. I was not only able to purchase my own but also buy a few games for it, something I've never been able to do previously when buying a new system. I usually deplete what money I had saved up buying the system and end up borrowing games from others until next Christmas when I can ask for some from my family (I have my birthday at the same time). Basically the purchasing of my 3DS is a triumphant story of success in my life. Struggling throughout high school and beyond, finally doing fairly well for myself, celebrate with buying the latest gadget I had been wanting for quite some time. It is quite honestly one of my most treasured possessions and prior to getting my 3DS I did't really care about my handheld devices. Sure, I loved using them and I used them all the time, I could hardly be separated from my DS/lite/i. But I had no respect for any of them because even though I bought them, the money tended to be gift money from family and friends from the holidays. This was the first time I had earned every cent by myself and apart from the lease to my apartment that I no longer live in, my 3DS is, or rather was, the only thing at the time I had ever paid for in full by myself.
I have saved all of my handheld devices and they are all still in working condition. Only my 3DS is still in pristine condition. I've taken care of it as well as I possibly can, I even purchase new styluses(?) and screen protectors every couple months to keep it looking good.
Anyways, post what reasoning was behind your purchasing a 3DS! I don't expect meaningful stories, I'm sure more than a few of you just decided hey its time to upgrade, but for those of you out there that have a story behind it... I'd love for you to share it.
