Have any of you done a Paper Mario Challenge Run before? Either on the N64 game or The Thousand Year Door? I haven't done many challenge runs on the sequel, but I have done quite a few on the first. Challenges I've done are:
Low Level BP only run, No items except Fright Jars, No HP or FP plus
(Not too difficult) a Low Level run is where you only fight required battles, use Fright Jars on enemies to avoid getting star points, such as the guards in the Koopa Bros Fortress. Once you get Bow and Parrakarry, use Spook and Air lift to avoid getting star points in required battles. You must defeat all optional bosses, but once you beat them you must reset to avoid getting star points. You don't have to do this when fighting in the dojo since you do not recieve star points
5 HP 5 FP Low level run, No items except Fright Jars
Similar to the other run, to reduce your HP to 5 you must level up your FP and your BP, then ask Chet Rippo to level up your BP, giving you 5 HP and 5 FP
Level 1 run, No Items
You play through the game with 10 HP 5 FP and 3 BP. Once you level up, you must level up your BP, but you can only use a total of 3 BP throughout the whole game.
I'm at Bowser's Castle right now in this run.
No Action Commands Run (Meaning you cannot guard either), Forced Variety Item Rule, No Life Shrooms, No Power Plus, No Defend Plus
Can't have more than one of any item type in your inventory at any one time, different types are: HP recovery items, FP recovery items, items that cause a status effect on the enemy, items that cause a status effect on Mario, items that cause damage to an enemy. So I can carry only one of each item type. I can carry a mushroom, a honey syrup, a dizzy dial, a stone cap and a fire flower at the same time, but I can't carry a sleepy sheep (Since I have a dizzy dial), or a volt shroom (Since I have a Stone Cap).
Characters like Watt and Bow are pretty much useless for attacking since they only do one damage per turn.
No Action Commands Run (Meaning you cannot guard either), No Items, No Power Plus, No Defend Plus
Same as the challenge above, only without using items at all. I barely used items in the above run anyway, I didn't even use an item against the two Bowser fights. I plan on doing this run once I finish my Partner only run
Mario only run, No items
Only use Mario. Partners always select do nothing for the whole game. I think the only exception to this rule in the whole game I think would be the Koopa Bros fight, since you need to attack twice in one turn to knock the Koopa Bros over. Mario by himself cannot knock the Koopa Bros over.
Partner only run, No Items
Mario selects "Do nothing" for the whole game, Mario cannot use items or Star Spirits. He also cannot change partners, only the partner themselves can switch on their turn.
(Bombette can knock the Koopa Bros over with Bomb)
No star powers, no items, no FP-consumption Minimum level Run
As stated, you can't use Star powers, items, or any moves or abilities that consume FP.
All the challenges I do, I don't use Merlee's curse to power up in battles, one of the main reasons is getting double star points in a minimum level run, the other being that you would relie on the curse too much to help you beat tough bosses
"Welcome to Die" Challenge Run
This is a challenge run I found on Youtube, It was created by a guy named VaeAsinus and played by a guy named by LpingWithArdwick.
I finished this run now and have it uploaded to youtube. Here is one of the many restrictions on this run: Each person gets to choose 2 badges (depending on how much bp I have) and one partner upgrade. I must keep those badges on for the remainder of the chapter.
Here is a link to the playlist and the first video
