Earlier this year, both Sony and Microsoft unveiled their motion control plans for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Although these could threaten the
Wii’s hold on the market, Nintendo doesn’t seem all that concern.
Reggie Fils-Aime, the President and Chief Operating Officer of Nintendo of America, made the following comments during a recent video interview with G4TV when asked about his thoughts on Project Natal for the Xbox 360 and the wand motion controller for the Playstation 3:
You know, it’s interesting. 2 ˝ - 3 years ago, when we talked about motion controls, these were the same competitors who were saying ‘just a gimmick.’ So we think it’s actually quite interesting that they’re now believing that it’s a way that’ll drive a new way of playing games.
In terms of what they’re trying to do, you know we’ll see. We’ll see what the software is, we’ll see the actual implementation is as well as what the price point is.
What we’re offering today is a great way to get 1:1 motion controls right now with
Wii MotionPlus. We brought it to life in a big way with
Wii Sports Resort. So, from our standpoint, we’ll continue to raise the ante and let our competitors follow the best way they can.
Microsoft’s Project Natal and Sony’s wand motion controller are both slated to launch next year. It would be interesting to see how the Nintendo
Wii, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 will stack up in sales once all three motion controllers are on the market.
