I've been a long-time Nintendo gamer, and lately, I've been moving to other platforms. Namely, the PS2.
Despite it being last-gen, I have noticed that many PS2 games are much more graphically intense than most
Wii games. (Excluding the few
Wii first-party titles that actually had good production values, such as Metroid Prime 3 and Zelda: Twilight Princess.) In my opinion, they also have better gameplay (Although, I am not trying to say that motion control is bad, it's just that most
Wii titles rely too heavily on the novelty of the controller than actually creating a good gameplay experience, exempting Metroid Prime 3 and Sin and Punishment 2)
I've been seeing many of the less graphically-intense PS2 games being ported to the
Wii directly, but I realized while playing Onimusha yesterday, that if it were released originally on the
Wii, it would be hailed as having great graphics and gameplay, and would be fiercely defended as a great
Wii game. It was released on PS2, but its reception was that the graphics were okay. The PS2 had higher standards of what constitutes a "good game"
This brings my overall idea to mind: Have we lowered our graphical standards for the
Wii? While the
Wii is actually graphically superior to the PS2, why do its games look worse? Thankfully, some games do utilize the
Wii's full potential (Such as Sin and Punishment 2), but it seems the majority of the
Wii's library is comprised of PS2 ports, shovelware, and first-party titles with lots of BLOOOOOM.
I think we've become disillusioned from relying on the
Wii as our entertainment source, and lowered our standards of what good games are. Speaking purely from the experience of buying a used PS2 after having only the
Wii for a long time, I've been finding that I enjoy PS2 games more than
Wii games, and I've been a Nintendo gamer all my life. I even sold my original PS2 to get Super Smash Brothers. Complete Nintendrone.
Fanboys, please do not participate in this discussion. Don't give excuses about how great Zelda and Metroid look, because that's all you've played. For those of you who actually play the
Wii's library, let's look at the
Wii as a whole.
