Nintendo Delay Tactics - 02-23-08

It's been going on for a long time. We all know it. Those of us who were aware of our childhood times remember the big delay for Ocarina of Time. Truly, Dark days....

Now as we approach the release of Super Smash Bros Brawl,....

Are we sure that it isn't gonna be held back another month?
(be quiet, I didn't jynx it, sakurai jynxed it since day 1.)

Not just that, Nintendo's over-all service, has been one big delay.
We're going to have to pay to play some games over wi-fi now. Yes, some are saying it is a very dissapointing thing. If they used the money to improve wi-fi, it'd be a great thing. I for one have not experienced any of this lag that many of you have reported experiencing. When I heard Nintendo was going online, I fell out of my chair. And I came, to the living room, and fell again. Since then, when I've gotten the urge to get online, it's been smooth sailing.

Delays,....Zelda, Metroid, Smash Bros, a Mario Game at launch, ...............
Delays. Downloadable content into games, that should've been implemented a long long time ago. An extra dungeon in Twilight Princess, or some other Less Disappointing ending to MP_03, would've been fantastic. Oh well.

What are your thoughts?

Wait a second.... what games are we going to need to pay to play? [I hope that they don't make it so that I need to pay to play MKDS]

according to the news post, it's hopefully going to be newer games since there's a new logo (a red one) that will signify whether you need to pay or not.

also, news post > this. :p

stuff just works slowly if it's going to be quality/other stuff. japanese/importing players have said brawl is awesome, so hopefully it's worth the wait and everything.

my initial reaction to the pay-to-play idea was mixed... since this may mean that there'll be actual wifi instead of just multiplayer without much of a structure (thank you friendcodes) but now... they might think to improve it.

but then again, they could just be making another dollar. nintendo hopefully won't go the way of the xbox :(

Re: Nintendo Delay Tactics - 02-23-08

Delays usually are for the better. Look at LoZ: TP. That game was delayed over and over and turned out to be one of the best games in its series. If developers plan to implement some extra features and therefore delay, it's not that big of a deal. But if they delay a game, because they're lazy or they have to translate it into six different languages (PAL) it's simply annoying.

About the pay to play thing. I personally wouldn't mind paying for an online service, but if they're going to launch such a project, I'd prefer not paying per game, but instead one price for a year. Like Xbox LIVE. If they expect me to pay like $10 a month for MK Wii then to hell with that. The monthly fees would stack up to an atrocious amount, seeing that almost every developer tries to add online to their games...

So basically, delays = whatever, deal with it... & pay to play = no monthly fees per game please!

Re: Nintendo Delay Tactics - 02-23-08

Very true. But remember, they're saying that it's going to be for certain games. Will they decide to handle it like Xbox Live? I am hoping so....I don't really know. I have my doubts about all this. Just hoping that it doesn't mess up Nintendo. About Twilight Princess, true, it is a beautiful looking game, but it's far from perfect. The bosses were far too easy, the lack of Kokiri and Gerudo was dissapointing, and the game in general was way too easy. If they would've released the Gamecube version first and then kept going with the Wii version of TP, possibly they could've added more things. Then again, they wouldn't wanna dish out more money for the "same" game.
The gamecube version seems more natural to me, but that's just me. On the Smash Bros side of things, I do understand. That game has alot of content. I'm excited about that, but why did they hold it back this past month AGAIN? Simple translation or what?

Rumor was they were taking out Geno. lol! (seriously though)

I agree with coop that tp could have been a lot better. I put down the game for a full three months because I hated playing the first three parts of the game (wolf link ftl), but I guess it was enjoyable to some/most people, so I'll stop there.

on the topic of how you pay,

I'd interpret that as paying for games separately, more than likely paying $5-15 (my own estimation) to activate a game's online functions (as a one-time purchase,(hopefully) most likely through the shop channel since wii points are said to be used). Hopefully that will go towards keeping the service better.

but at least brawl won't be a pay-to-play game. hopefully.

The P2P games are coming in the future, it doesn't apply to current Wi-Fi games.

Anyway, longer times in development means a better game, so I think it's a good thing.

Re: Nintendo Delay Tactics - 02-24-08

Rumour was that they held it back (the Dec. 3rd date) to remove Geno. This delay was for translating the game from Japanese to English, and then proceeding to make enough copies for launch (which will be big).

Re: Nintendo Delay Tactics - 02-24-08

Personally, I accept delays as long as they are reasonable.
A lot of games delayed, (Twilight Princess, and Half-life 1 & 2 for example)
turned out well.
Now for Brawl, I used to think the delays were ok, but I saw a lot of glitch videos for Brawl. Plus the Geno delay I didn't agree with.
