"It's survival in the city..."

-Joe Walsh

Story

It's 1979; New York City is overflowing with over 100,000 gang members, each group
controlling specific territories and standing strong. Amongst all of them one tries to
make a impact of their own, the Warriors. Cyrus, leader of the largest gang in New
York the Gremercy Riffs, calls for a massive meeting in hopes of uniting all gangs
under one leader thus out numbering the police 5 to 1 and claiming the city for
themselves. Cyrus called the meeting and spoke before the 9 delegates sent by each
gang, everything seemed fine until a single gun shot filled the air. Cyrus lay in a pool
of blood and the Rogues we're to blame though the Warriors got the shaft, now the
Warriors must somehow make it back to their home turf and only one thing stands in
their way, angry gang members packing in the thousands.

Gameplay

The Warriors is the first Movie-to-Game that didn't fail, Rockstar based this game on
the same 1979 cult hit of the same name and instead of just giving us the movie to
play, they went as far as giving us 3 additional months to play leading up to the event
of Cyrus's demise. The game puts you in control of the nine main Warriors as you try
and make them the strongest in NYC, Rockstar even went a gathered up the
remaining original cast of the 1979 film and added their voice talents just to tack on
greatness to the game. The Warriors a is mission based game but don't let that turn
you away, there’s also a option to wander around the Warriors home turf between
missions to help out the people or just collect and vandalize. The missions allow the
gamer to play as each of the main 9 Warriors, individual they all have superb skills but
together they're unstoppable. The missions include a wide variety of tasks such as
graffiti, taking on rival gangs and yes even missions that just have you vandalize
stores for cash and even stealing car stereos all things that are done in the movie.
Now The Warriors isn’t about beating up police and shooting everyone in sight, in fact
the only weapons in The Warriors are the ones you find in the streets such as planks
of wood right down to beer bottles. Each mission is set with a different Warrior as
War chief/Leader, the War chief can issue commands to other Warriors to assist him
or even beat on snitches that threaten to call the police due to your vandalism or
gang fighting.

Walk side-by-side as you try to take NYC

Graphics/Visual

As excellent as this game is the graphics are nothing impressive, using the same
graphics engine as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas may turn some gamers away from
this great game, please don't let it. All the Warriors are detailed and mapped just as
they were in the 1979 movie, down to the detailed vests that sport the classic "W".
Street lights and houses light your way through the streets, giving the characters the
eerie shaded look matching perfectly with the movie. Every gang in The Warriors has
their detailed look as they did in the film and even the toughest gang, The Baseball
Furies, are masked perfectly behind their face paint. Another neat feature added to
The Warriors is battle damage, every time your character breaks into a car or gets
into brawls your characters body will take the toll leaving them bloody and bruised.
The health in The Warriors is called "Flash", if your character is hurt take a dose of flash,
get greedy and the screen starts to sway and become distorted just as your character
is feeling leaving you open for attacks.

Sound/Audio

This is one of the categories that makes or breaks the game and The Warriors
brilliantly passed with flying colors. As i stated before the film and game are set in 1979
and the soundtrack is straight from the movie giving just the right tunes in situations you
encounter through NYC. While hanging about in the Warriors safe house tunes are played
on the radio and fill the area, all the 1 hit wonders on the late 1970's. When your in battle,
you can actually feel the impact of the punch and kicks you deliver, a well placed brick
attack will rock your speakers and your foes head. While heading around NYC people sit
on their steps talking and rival gangs can be heard plotting their next move all in crisp, clear
audio as nothing is left out. As i stated before Rockstar rounded up the remaining cast of
TheWarriors and even though they got older, their efforts put into the characters matched
perfectly with the movie making this game shine a little more.

Battle rival gangs or become yesterdays trash

Controls

The controls are straight forward all the way till the end of the game, mapping out
everything right on the screen and never leaving the gamer in the dark. Getting down
to business your character is armed with punch/kick combos that are easily set to
the "X" and "A" buttons and "B" to grapple your opponent. Now don't let that turn
you away, there are plenty of combos to experiment with and the best feature is the
double team action. While your battling the rival gang members or police you'll notice
that your members grapple an opponent and face you, simply run over and press
either the punch or kick action button to unleash a brutal double team depending on
what your holding such as, a devastating elbow to the skull right down to a sturdy plank
to the face. While on your own fighting and out numbered don't panic, by pressing both
attack buttons together unleashes a surrounding attack clearing out enemies, making
them think twice about rushing you again. The power moves are stunning and simple to
pull off, if you have someone in your grasp press both attacks to start the combo and finish
it as you please, the combinations are limitless. The only problem I found in The Warriors
regarding controls would fall under switching targets, turning around and trying to lock onto
a specific target can be a tad tricky but don't let that pull you away because this can be
overlooked almost completely.

Replay Value/Longevity

Sadly The Warriors didn't come with the Xbox Live feature though it's not a problem
at all because it's filled with 2-player Co-op goodness. When finally completing The
Warriors the gamer is left with mass amounts to do, Replay levels if you feel you left
something out and even play them in Co-op. The Warriors contain special levels
called "Flashback" where you can play and find out how each of the main 9 Warriors
came to be. An old school beat-em up is available to play called "Armies of the Night"
it's a side 3D scrolling version of Double Dragon with The Warriors taking the role of
Billy and Jimmy Lee, another Co-op great. The feature that makes this game high in
Replay Value falls under "Rumble Mode", you can access features such as King of
The Hill, 18 man battle royal and Capture The Flag (replaced with a woman for the
flag) just to name a few. If it's just roaming around the neighborhood or bashing about
with a friend, The Warriors will never leave you bored.
