1B Introduction
I have been working on team buidling for a while now, I have come up with a great way to team build. I will teach you an easy and awesome way to build your team, eight pokemon, six in your acual team and two substitutes.
Lets start with the basics...
2C The Basics
What a Team should have:- A Starter
- A Physical Sweeper
- A Special Sweeper
- A Physical Tank
- A Special Tank
- A Mixed Sweeper
- A Supporter
Now, if you don't know what these mean, I will easily define them for you, to make them easier to understand and give you some examples. You don't have to have them in a order, just make sure they go with your team's strategy.
2A Definitions
Starter-
A pokemon designed to give your team a good start, a pawn from chess if you will, alot of starters want to set-up, dragon dance from gyradaos, spikes, stealth rock, etc.; so a great starter could possibly use taunt or a status move(Thunder Wave, etc.) as a good option to prevent your opponent from setting up. Counter, mirror coat, and encore are also great options whom I use.
For Example:
Absol @Focus Sash
Sand Veil | Lonely
252 Atk & Spe 4 Hp- Sword Dance
- Counter
- Sucker Punch
- Taunt
Physical Sweeper-
A pokemon whom has a great base in atk or have a boost, pure power, huge power, etc., great physical sweepers have exceptionally high speed bases and a vast physical movepool. Some can hold a life orb, a choice band, or a choice scarf.
For Example:
Breloom @Toxic Orb
Poison Heal | Adamant
252 Atk & Spe 4 Hp- Spore
- Substitute
- Focus Punch
- Seed Bomb
Special Sweeper-
A pokemon whom has a great base in Special attack, great special sweepers have exceptionally high speed bases and a vast physical movepool. Some can hold a life orb, a choice band, or a choice scarf.
For Example:
Alakazam @Choice Scarf
Inner Focus | Modest
252 SpA & Spe 4 Hp- Psychic
- Energy Ball/Grass Knot
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power Ice/Charge beam
Physical tank-
A pokemon who has a great base in defense, good tanks have high bases in Hit Points. Alot of tanks also serve as extra support, wish, heal bell, spikes, etc. You should depend on your tanks for alot of the game, blocking attack by attack and stalling and having an advantage. Most physical tanks have decent physical attack bases but there are some exceptions.
For example:
Torterra @Leftovers
Overgrow | Impish
252 Def & Hp 4 Atk- Stealth Rock
- Roar
- Seed Bomb
- Earthquake
Special Tank-
A pokemon who has a great base in special defense, good tanks have high bases in Hit Points. Alot of tanks also serve as extra support, wish, heal bell, spikes, etc. You should depend on your tanks for alot of the game, blocking attack by attack and stalling and having an advantage. Most special tanks have decent special attack bases but there are some exceptions.
For example:
Tentacruel @Leftovers
Luquid Ozze | Calm
252 Hp & SpD- Toxic Spikes
- Rapid Spin
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power Electric
Support-
A pokemon who supports the team, to make the game or the rest of it easier, they tend to have moves such as Baton pass, wish, heal bell, etc. They are an important part in the game and can cost your opponent the game. Stallers also count as since they are just there to support the rest of the team with their difficulties.
For Example:
Ninjask @Focus Sash
Speed Boost | Jolly
252 Atk & Spe - Protect
- Sword Dance
- Baton Pass
- X-Scissor
Mixed Sweeper-
A pokemon whom has great bases in both special, and physial attacks, they tend to have good speed bases or can set up boosting their other attack, sword dance, nasty plot, etc. They can break anything other than mixed tanks so they are great to have in a team.
For example:
Lucario @Life orb
Stead Fast | Naive
252 Spe 148 Atk 108 SpA - Earthquake
- Dark Pulse
- Aura Sphere
- Extreme Speed

Part two(Did'nt have enough room)
Mixed Tank-
A pokemon whom has great bases in both special, and physial defenses, they tend to have good hit point bases or can set up boosting their other defense, calm mind, bulk up, etc. They do support most of the time but they are ment to be the ultimate tanks. They can also be refered to as a "Wall". They can also serve as stallers.
For example:
Suicune @Leftovers
Pressure | Bold
252 Hp & Def 4 SpA- Calm Mind
- Roar
- Ice beam/Surf
- Hidden power
2B Team Building
Now for acual team building. In a team you need to have pokemon that work well together, stalling their weaknesses by pairing up, supporting each other, killing your opponents one by one, these are some examples of what great teams do. An easy way to build a team is by using each of your pokemons weakness to an advantage, for example, say your have a gyrados on one turn, your opponent switches in a starmie, you expect a thunder-bolt so you automatically switch to electvire, it then gains a speed boost and not harming yourself and may have cost your opponent the game, another example of this way is say, your have a sceptile, your opponent switches in a roserade, your expect a sludge bomb so switch in to tentacruel, you then use toxic spikes to support your other team mates. This strategy works well, for help with that, I recommend the Marriland Team Builder, it helps alot for people who arent good with the game mechanics. When going for a team, you should think about your pokemon's moveset, you may want to use hidden power to counter your counters for special attackers, setting up may end the game for alot, if your opponent doesnt have a phazer, I recommend two phazers for each team, one for a pokemon who can take physical hits and one who can take special hits, although I would not have two on a team if a mixed tank on your team can serve as a phazer, it can really counter these kind of things. You want to counter alot for a team so it will be sucessful, I felt very sad when a shedninja took out my whole team, dont let this happen to you. You can also use a weather teams, they are successful sometimes and work hard together, rain dance, sunny day, hail, and sand storms are examples of weather teams, for sandstorm I recommend either hippowdon or tyranitar as a starter, even if it doesnt fill in the position I said it should, for hail use abmasnow, it's a great strategy that works quite well together. If you're a hard worker heres something to test your team, go to Smogon Pokemon Stategy Pokedex, click on each and every pokemon, seeing their possiblitys and pretend that pokemon is a starter on a team, if your team cannot counter it then edit your team. An easier way is to get a chart of pokemon, then look at each pokemon in their full evolution, think of what their main purpose was supposed to be and try and counter it by pretending it was a starter for an opponent team. If you would like, I dont recommend but you can even out your team by putting an even number of physical attackers and special attacks(Mixed pokemon count as both). Building a perfect team is quite impossible since almost everything has a counter, so you want few to counter it, I have gone in and out of about 10 good teams so far and none are perfect, they do exceptionally well but they're not perfect. If you want to test your team there is a program where all people do is test their teams, I highly recommend this Shoddy Battle Program, during the battle alot of it depends on predicting your opponents move, pokemon is kinda like chess, trick your opponent to get to their king(In pokemon's case the game). You don't have to completly follow this guide because I'm mainly trying to set an example so you understand how to team build good. It's a good idea to reorganize my guide and put pokemon you want to, but those are the basics ideas of pokemon. For example you can chose a mixed tank instead of a physical tank if it is better for your team, if it works well with your team and covers some of your other pokemon's weakness'. The team should center on two pokemon, either waiting for the right time to set up or just have an amazing strategy in general. The other pokemon should counter the center's weaknesses, so it can prepare to set up or destroy the other team. Themes are awesome too, weather they are to take out any pokemon that can counter your strategy and when done sweeping them with the end of the battle, since they have no counters; or to a theme where you stall them until you take out every pokemon of theirs, even if it takes time. To build a good team it takes alot of effort and researching, and testing. You should rely mostly on strategy in the game, everything thing else factors the game but when you have the right pokes, all you need is strategy. Also you might end up changing your plan..for instance if your wall is out, you will need to find a new strategy to defeat your enemy.
2C The End
I have taken my time and have carefully written this guide, do not go to some other site and copy and paste this whole thread and act like its yours, I have worked hard on this.
For help with a team or you are unsure what position a pokemon on your team should be please post. if you dont know what any of this means please reframe from posting. Also, mods feel free to edit. :D
Thanks, Munje

Physical Walls
A pokemon who has a great base in defense, good walls have high bases in Hit Points. Alot of walls also serve as stallers, toxic, confuse ray, spikes, etc. Most would depend on their walls for alot of the game, blocking attack by status problems, stalling and having an advantage. Most physical walls have decent physical Hp bases but there are some exceptions.
For Example:

Skarmory @leftovers
Keen Eye | Impish
252 HP / 96 Atk / 156 Def / 4 Spe
- Drill Peck
- Roost
- Spikes
- Whirlwind
Special Walls
A pokemon who has a great base in special defense, good walls have high bases in Hit Points. Alot of walls also serve as stallers, toxic, confuse ray, spikes, etc. Most would depend on their walls for alot of the game, blocking attack by status problems, stalling and having an advantage. Most physical walls have decent physical Hp bases but there are some exceptions.
For Example:

Blissey @leftovers
natural Cure | Bold
252 HP / 200 Def / 58 SpD
- Seismic Toss
- Softboiled
- Thunder Wave
- Stealth Rock
Mixed Wall
A pokemon whom has good bases in both special and physial defenses, they tend to have good hit point bases or can set up boosting their there weaker defense, calm mind, bulk up, etc. They do support most of the time but they are ment to be the ultimate walls.
For example:

Umbreon @leftovers
Synchronize | Careful
252 hp / 24 Def / 232 Spe
- curse
- toxic
- moonlight
- payback

Protip: Hit Ctrl+F to search.
Not a bad guide, though I wouldn't necessarily say every team needs all eight of those classes of pokes. That's really narrowing your choices down when you're trying to make an effective team.

Thanks and they don't, I'm just trying to set an example of what they should consist of, I'm just showing them an example, not really saying they have to have these certain pokes on a team, this is my way, you dont have to follow all of it.
