Standard Rules - Get to know them' - 06-28-08

Below there're the most used rules used here in the forum.

When you just say Standard rules, you're immediately agreeing with them when opening a thread.

* Sleep Clause

You can't use sleep inducing moves in opponent's Pokémon when there's another Pokémon in his/her team asleep. Yawn can't be used to PseudoHaze (make opponent switch) when there's another Pokémon asleep caused by you. When the asleep Pokémon awakes or faints, you're free to make another Pokémon of his/her team asleep. Sleeping being caused by Effect Spore or Rest are disconsidered from Sleep Clause.

* Species Clause

You can't use two of the same Pokémon in a team.

* Evasion Clause

You can't use moves that increases your evasion. Avoid the use of Acupressure, it has 1/7 chance to double your evasion.

* OHKO Clause

You are strictly prohibited of using OHKO moves. They are Guillotine, Horn Drill, Fissure and Sheer Cold.

* No Hacks

Don't need to explain, you are prohibited to use any illegally obtained Pokémon. Hacking parents to breed is also unaccepted, but people can't control this just looking at the stats.

* No Ubers

Uber Pokémon are overpowered Pokémon. Since these are "Standard Rules" you have to use the "Standard Pokémon". Click here for a list of Uber Pokémon

* No Hax Items

These are all the items that relies on luck to activate. These items are:
Brightpowder, Focus Band, King's Rock, Lax Incense, Quick Claw, Razor Claw, Razor Fang and Scope Lens. (Tell me if I missed some).

Note: Scope Lens and Razor Claw are considered Hax items, but they are the only one that is accepted normally in Wi-Fi.

* No Disconnecting

You can't turn off your DS or move away from signal range to end a battle. People can have weak routers so don't always fight with the people if he/she disconnected.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
These are the rules that most people play, and below there're unusual rules usually applied, but it's outside of Standard:
* Self KO - NOT STANDARD!
You can't use Destiny Bond, Perish Song, Selfdestruct or Explosion to force a tie. People usually dislike the fact he/she lost the last Pokémon in a battle, the rule exists, but it's rarely added as standard since it's also a strategy.
* Item Clause - NOT STANDARD!
Two Pokémon can't hold same items. Using Trick/Switcheroo in a Pokémon and receiving/getting an item that other Pokémon in your team has doesn't break the clause.
* Freeze Clause - NOT STANDARD!
Pokémon can't Freeze two Pokémon at once.
Note: This clause is standard in battle simulators, since if one Pokémon is frost, the program can just ignore the freezing chance the attack has. But it's definately not standard since we never know if an attack is going to freeze.
* No Weather - NOT STANDARD!
It avoids the use of Hippowdon, Tyranitar and Abomasnow. Just because the battles slow down because of Sandstorm/Hail damage and leftovers recovery every turn.
* No SkarmBliss - NOT STANDARD!
A dumb rule created by someone unknown that didn't have skills to handle Skarmory and Blissey used in the same team. Definately not standard, but it's there... Also the combination of these aren't as effective as it was in Advance.
* No Legendaries - NOT STANDARD!
Another rule that avoids the use of Pokémon. The allowed legendaries are as strong as any OverUsed Pokémon, so they're completely fine in the standard play. BUT some people dislike them and decided to block all the legendaries. There's the Uber list to block the unfair legendaries (And Wobbuffet).
* No Baton Pass chains - NOT STANDARD!
Baton Pass chains are teams that uses a lot of Baton Pass Pokémon to get multiple boosts in a Pokémon.
* No switching - DEFINATELY NOT STANDARD!
People who are weak at predicting or just thinks switching is a waste of time, use this rule. Good luck at finding someone who agrees with this rule.
* Confusion Clause - NOT STANDARD!
No attacks that are sure to cause confusion can be used.
* Everything Goes - NOT STANDARD!
Self explanatory - No rules applied.
* Choice Clause - NOT STANDARD!
User can't use more than one Choice item in their teams (Choice Band, Choice Scarf and Choice Specs).
Ok, with the hax items list, I don't see what the problem is with everything from King's Rock down. The chances of these things happening are so small, why are they considered hax?
Re: Standard Rules - Get to know them' - 06-29-08
- Scope Lens and Razor Fang (along with the likes of Lucky Punch, Sticks, etc) are NOT hax items in anyway. These items are not based on chance. Whoever thought they are hax items just have no idea how critical works from 3rd generation onwards. Saying those above are hax items would be comparable to saying Choice Band and Choice Specs are Hax items too.
- OHKO is most definitely not part of the Standard Clauses. Smogon agrees with it not being standard too.
The reason being that, if a battle invite says "Standard but no OHKO clause", it completely gives away what they are going to do with certain memebers of their team.
Therefore, it's actually preferred for everyone to say, "Standard and OHKO clause". That will not spoil any plans prior to the start of a battle.
- Self-KO clause is not a restriction of those moves. Self-KO clause means, if both parties are down to one Pokemon. Whoever used moves like Perish Song, Explosion, etc to force a tie, should be considered the loser of the battle. Of course DP will not recognize that and will still issue a tie. However, in terms of tournaments it's very useful in determining ranks. In my opinion this should be one of the Standards.
- Item clause in fact refers you cannot have more than 2 of the same items in all the Pokemon of your party (not more than 1 of the same item). There are situations where 2 of the same items are necessary for a particular tactic, specially in double battles.
*In my opinion "no hacks" shouldn't be necessary to as one of the said rules - it's just common sense. If cheating is to be ever allow, there just won't be any order to the game. You cheats, I can cheat too...if you can't stand playing a fair game, what made you think you'll like when people around you start cheating too...
*No D/C also isn't practical being one of the rules. It's a common battle courtesy. If one just wants to d/c there's nothing we can do about it prior to them disconnecting. Also these days with Wifi being so fickle this issue is kind of iffy. - However, there ARE ways to tell Wifi disconnections apart from player d/c's.
Re: Standard Rules - Get to know them' - 06-29-08
Oh god... THIS is why I stopped playing Pokémon (competitively). Why do we even need rules like this? Why can't Pokémon be just like other RPGs? Beat your opponent, however you want. I understand the no D/Cing and the no hacked Pokémon, but COME ON!!! Why couldn't you use sleep-inducing moves on an opponent? Why couldn't you use OHKO moves? Why no Ubers? It's part of the freaking game! This is absolutely ridiculous, and it happens with several games (i.e. Mario Kart and snaking, Mario Strikers/Brawl and spamming, Brawl and items). If the developers put in things that could help you when playing against other people, then it should be perfectly fine to use them, because they're part of the game. This obsession is just pointless. In my honest opinion, "Standard Rules" should simply be no hacked Pokémon and no D/Cing. That's IT.
Feel free to flame me or give me negative karma, but that's my opinion on why Pokémon isn't very interesting anymore.
Trying my best not to get bored here. Will post occasionally.
Re: Standard Rules - Get to know them' - 06-30-08
Well, these are the standard rules, so thanks for posting. ^^
I'd just like to say I think the h4x clause is dumb. I use the Quick Claw and no one seems to notice promarily because the dumb thing hardly works. :P Luck is EVERYWHERE in the game. I mean, the odds of being frozen are about as likely as an entire match being affected by one Pokemon's King's Rock. Focus Band is also another one that seems to hate people who use it more than people against it.
Brightpowder falls into the accuracy clause which is psychotically annoying... so that's the only one I could see banned...
Sigh. At the same time, I shouldn't rely on a luck item, anyway... 'twould be wise to find something else, I guess.
Huh. I always thought the item clause was standard but hum.
