Not entirely true. Staraptor has higher attack than Swellow at the base. Swellow needs a status infliction in order to take advantage of Guts, so it's going to be loosing health per turn. Add in various other attacks, and Swellow's HP starts drizzling down fast. Granted Staraptor isn't a wall itself, it has one thing over Swellow to make it a better choice in some cases: Close Combat. That means the Steel and Rock and Ice types that'd laugh at any other bird, are going to cry when Staraptor shows up and knocks them down a peg with Close Combat. Both have a huge con though; in order to make Swellow stronger, it needs to be poisoned, and while that makes it immune to other status inflictions, that also means it's taking damage per turn. For Staraptor, it has frail defenses and thanks to Close Combat, they won't be getting any better, making it's defenses a weakened mess. It pretty much comes down to this: Coverage or power? Swellow's stronger with Toxic Orb, but Staraptor doesn't need it to take advantage of it's power and covers more types.
