Smile Just got back into pokemon!

I have recently been getting back into pokemon and i have a copy of heartgold =]
Ive spent the past couple of days EV training my team i just wondered if anyone could give me some feed back on what they think(Im still in the process of finishing of my training so its not set in stone as this is what im going to keep)
I havent decided on any items yet so that would be much appriciated feed back!
(I wasnt sure wether or not to post this in rate my team because its not complete so i posted it here)

Ampharos EVs Spec Atk 252 Speed 252 HP 4
    Moveset
    ~Thunderbolt
    ~Thunder Punch
    ~Signalbeam
    ~Focus Punch

Im pretty happy with my Ampharos, tbh.

Mamoswine EVs Atk 252 Speed 252 HP 4
    Moveset
    ~Earthquake
    ~Ice Shard
    ~Ancient Power
    ~Stonedge

Im not to sure on the moveset atm.

Typhlosion EVs Spec Atk 252 Speed 252 Spec Def 4
    Moveset
    ~Erruption
    ~Flamethower
    ~Focus Blast
    ~Overheat

I havent finished training up my quilava yet, so this is what im aiming for atm my quilava has none of these moves and is one of my weaker pokemon. its moves are ember flame wheel tackle and swift and i know some of the moves listed are learned in later levels is there anything i can do to temporarily improve him?

Gengar EVs Def 4 Spec Atk 252 Speed 252
    Moveset
    ~Shadow Ball
    ~Hidden Power
    ~Hypnosis
    ~Dream Eater

Im pretty set on the moves with gengar but is there a better Ev variety for him?

Gyarados EVs Atk 252 Speed 252 HP 4
    Moveset
    ~Dragon Dance
    ~Aqua Tail
    ~Waterfall
    ~Ice Fang

Ive taught gyarados dragon dance because it raises his attack and speed and also trained him in attack and speed to get maximum benefit. im not sure on ice fang or aqua tail though.

Crobat EVs HP 232 Def 56 Spec Def 76 Speed 144
    Moveset
    ~Taunt
    ~Roost
    ~Superfang
    ~Fly

This is what im aiming for on my crobat, im half way there on my moveset but i tried to move tutor(the guy in blackthorn city) him so he could learn superfang but it wasnt on the list? is there any other way to do it? i also wanted to learn bravebird but is there any other way than teaching it from an egg? also im only using fly to get about atm so ill be changing that once i finish the game

So yeah there you go any help would be awesome thanks

Smile Re: Just got back into pokemon!

    Edit in green.

    Ampharos

    Held Item: Wise Glasses
    EVs: HP 4 / SAtk 252 / Spd 252
    Moveset:
    ~Thunderbolt
    ~Focus Blast
    ~Signal Beam
    ~Thunder Wave

Thunder Wave would lower the Speed stat to half from your opponent's Pokémon, to make an effective improvement of allowing Ampharos to strike first with enough Speed stat from the amount of Effort Values (EVs) you given to it. Focus Blast might be required for enough power to defeat any types of Pokémon that Thunderbolt couldn't do enough damage on. Wise Glasses increase a bit of damage by using Special Attack moves.

    Mamoswine

    Held Item: White Herb
    EVs: HP 4 / Atk 252 / Spd 252
    Moveset:
    ~Earthquake
    ~Ice Shard
    ~Superpower
    ~Stone Edge

Superpower would be recommended for defeating more types of Pokémon, especially Tyranitar. When Mamoswine's stats is being lowered by using Superpower, the White Herb would restore it, to keep the other moves from getting their strength decreases. You don't actually need AncientPower, since it's based on being a Special Attack with average Base Power, and Stone Edge got more power that fits Mamoswine more satisfying.

    Typhlosion

    Held Item: Heat Rock
    EVs: SAtk 252 / SDef 4 / Spd 252
    Moveset:
    ~Fire Blast
    ~SolarBeam
    ~Focus Blast
    ~Sunny Day

Typhlosion have too many Fire-type moves with different powers and effects, which might be best to keep one that would be best for battles, and save the others for different types of offensive moves for other types of Pokémon. Sunny Day would be a startup to increase the power of Fire Blast, SolarBeam for a great counterattack, and increasing resistance from Water-type moves. Heat Rock extends the weather for the best.

    Gengar

    Held Item: Wide Lens
    EVs: Def 4 / SAtk 252 / Spd 252
    Moveset:
    ~Shadow Ball
    ~Focus Blast
    ~Hypnosis
    ~Dream Eater

Gengar is good with enough EVs it required, since Gengar's Speed stat should be plenty enough for letting Hypnosis to take effect, before your opponent's Pokémon gets the chance to use a move, and Gengar's Special Attack stat is plenty enough to perform much damage. The Wide Lens is required to raise the accuracy of Focus Blast and Hypnosis, and Focus Blast is a strong counterattack for Dark-types and Steel-types.

    Gyarados

    Held Item: Focus Sash
    EVs: HP 4 / Atk 252 / Spd 252
    Moveset:
    ~Dragon Dance
    ~Earthquake
    ~Waterfall
    ~Ice Fang

Ice Fang is best to use than Aqua Tail, since Gyarados can use it on more types of Pokémon for the advantage, which is Grass-types and Dragon-types, and Waterfall couldn't perform enough damage on those types, but best to use on other types with good accuracy. Gyarados is double vulnerable to Electric-type moves, which would be safe enough to hold a Focus Sash, for the best chance to use Dragon Dance without worrying.

    Crobat

    Held Item: Black Sludge
    EVs: HP 232 / Def 56 / SDef 76 / Spd 144
    Moveset:
    ~Bite
    ~Confuse Ray
    ~Super Fang
    ~Fly

Super Fang can be taught when you have at least 40 Battle Points (BP), and it's located at the Frontier Access, not Blackthorn City. Crobat can only learn Brave Bird by egg moves, and there is no possible way to teach Crobat in any other method. Confuse Ray is best for giving your opponent's Pokémon a bit of damage while you're in good protection, while Bite can provide more help if Super Fang won't work on Ghost-types.

Re: Just got back into pokemon!

Ok this should be in the rate my team forum I believe
But anyway I think that your EV spreads are pretty good but movesets and pokemon choice need work
For example Ampharos is outclassed by so many better candidates as well as Typhlosion
Also you have multiple moves of the same type which lowers coverage.

I recommend getting maybe a 'tutor' to help better your pokemon selection and movesets
There are some very good ones on Smogon.
The trouble with smogon I find is that now it makes things predictable in battle and everyone just uses the same sets

Very good for a new member. should definatly be moved. You'll get much more help there. If this gets moved there I'll post again, a bit too busy to go through it right now XD

Also PMing or VMing people is a good way to get help as well, you just gotta know who's good and who's not lol

Whilst this is a week old, the members above are right in the fact that a thread like this should go in the RMT sub-forum, so on that note, I've moved it. Best of luck with your team, bud. I'd help you myself, but this isn't really my area of expertise.

Ampharos EVs Spec Atk 252 Speed 252 HP 4
    Moveset
    ~Thunderbolt
    ~Thunder Punch
    ~Signalbeam
    ~Focus Punch

Im pretty happy with my Ampharos, tbh.

I'm sorry, but I just can't find a competitively viable set for Ampharos. with a base speed of 55 it outspeeds next to nothing in the metagame. here's what I'd suggest in lieu of Ampharos:

    Electivire (M) @ Life Orb
    Trait: Motor Drive
    EVs: 40 Atk / 252 SAtk / 216 Spd
    Mild Nature (+SAtk, -Def)
    - Thunderbolt
    - Hidden Power [Ice]
    - Cross Chop
    - Flamethrower

This set has amazing super effective coverage, and with a motor drive boost can hit enough speed to outspeed scarf heatran. Also, I wouldn't use electivire as my lead, as part of your strategy could be to switch gyarados to electivire one a predicted electric attack.

    Mamoswine @ choice band/ScarfEVs Atk 252 Speed 252 HP 4
    Moveset
    ~Earthquake
    ~Ice Shard
    ~SuperpowerAncient Power
    ~Stone Edge
Again, amazing super effective coverage here. try not to lock yourself into a move before all it's immunities are gone. the choice between band and scarf is down to prefence, if you prefer to outhit or outrun other pokes

Typhlosion EVs Spec Atk 252 Speed 252 Spec Def 4
    Moveset
    ~Erruption
    ~Flamethower
    ~Focus Blast
    ~Overheat

Yes, you can improve him by switching him for the all-better Dragonite. It gets better stabs and is much more bulkier. It can also run fire moves if it chooses. Many sets on Dragonite. I think this will fit you best:

    Dragonite (M) @ Lum Berry
    Trait: Inner Focus
    EVs: 224 HP / 80 Atk / 204 Spd
    Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
    - Dragon Dance
    - Dragon Claw
    - Roost
    - Earthquake

This gives you a bulky pokemon to fall back on should another pokemon start setting up. Dragonite also has an immense physical movepool, so you can switch up the attacking moves depending on what you want to hit.

Gengar @ black sludge EVs Def 4 Spec Atk 252 Speed 252
    Moveset
    ~Shadow Ball
    ~Focus Blast Hidden Power
    ~Substitute Hypnosis
    ~Pain Split Dream Eater

Im pretty set on the moves with gengar but is there a better Ev variety for him?
EV's are good, but you should definatly go for a timid nature along with black sludge. Sub blocks status.

Gyarados@ Lum Bery EVs Atk 252 Speed 252 HP 4
    Moveset
    ~Dragon Dance
    ~earthquakeAqua Tail
    ~Waterfall
    ~Ice Fang

Ive taught gyarados dragon dance because it raises his attack and speed and also trained him in attack and speed to get maximum benefit. im not sure on ice fang or aqua tail though.
Don't use focus sash, as gyarados is easy bait with 1 hp. Use lum berry to block status, switch to a different pokemon if you think that an electric attack is coming.

    Forretress (F) @ Focus Sash
    Trait: Sturdy
    EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
    Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
    - Spikes
    - Stealth Rock
    - Rapid Spin
    - Explosion

try not to explode unless absolutely necessary. Other than that, set up stealth rocks and spikes when you have the opprotunity.

So yeah there you go any help would be awesome thanks
here's what I'd do, my changes are bolded and explained. Sorry for the quick ending I have to go

Re: Just got back into pokemon!

My computer at work doesn't let me view both your team and type at the same time, so I'ma do this from memory.

    1. Half of your team is weak to Rock (Typhlosion, Gyarados and Crobat)
So Stealth Rock is a problem and you'll need a Rapid Spinner, at least.

    2. You need to put Items and Natures on the pokes so that we know what strategy you are going for.

    3. I happen to love Typhlosion and Ampharos very much. They are both powerful and can be used effectively. However, giving Typhlosion 3 fire type moves I believe it is and Ampharos 2 electric moves is redundant. If you Choice Spec'd one of them, then having a super move like Eruption and Fire Blast is fine given how Eruption's power decreases. But, having Thunderpunch and Thunderbolt on Ampharos is pretty useless. Try having these setups:

    Ampharos@Shell Bell
    Modest Nature
    Static
    252 HP/ 4 Def/ 252 Sp Attack
    -Thunder/Thunderbolt/Discharge
    -Thunderwave
    -HP Ice
    -Headbutt

This Ampharos can use ParaFlinch while gaining HP back. But, can decimate with BoltBeam. It can setup for the rest of your team, etc. It's simple, but can be multi-functional.

    Typhlosion@Choice Specs
    Timid Nature
    4 HP/ 252 Sp Attack/ 252 Speed
    -Eruption
    -Fire Blast/Overheat
    -HP Electric/ HP Grass
    -Focus Blast

With his high speed and sp attack, he's a monster with Choice Specs. He can use Eruption if at full HP and if he switches in too much, then Fire Blast/Overheat is the best option. HP electric/grass hits water types hard. Grass is preferred given it can hit ground, rock and water.
