I think that's their true purpose; to add in another crazy and wacky feature to the most comical (and fun!) fighting game ever. You have to admit, the scramble for the Smash Ball can be a blast, and using it is even better. It's fun to see if you can wipe out the entire field, and it's fun to try to survive Final Smashes like the Landmaster, or dodge to make your opponents miss and waste it, like Link, CF, Marth, etc.
I'm just saying that the creators has a little foresight and tweaked it a little to where it could be used to make a comeback easier than using it to completely wipe the floor with your victims.
Basically, you can finish off as many as possible and claw your way out of third or fourth place. If you're lucky (or good (I vote for the latter)) you can use it to seal away a dominating victory.

When I saw the title, I swear I thought it was tyler123, complaining(whining) about another thing that has the potential to kill him on Brawl.Anywho, when I used to brawl with items I just dodge rolled and aerial dodged, which usually did the trick.
