You could say I'm a veteran Super Smash Bros. player. I haven't been playing since the first Super Smash Bros. game came out, but I have played for a LONG time, nonetheless.
Anyway, I have been playing since Super Smash Bros. Melee, and since that time, not once have I seen anyone major my favorite Nintendo character; Luigi.
I know that some people may test him out here and there, playing him for kicks or just purposes of diversity if the player likes to play with a range of characters. But not once have I encountered another Luigi mainer. I;m thinking that this may be purely due to the fact that people view him as an infrior character, being "over-shadowed" by others, as is often referenced in the game. But, trust me, I can tell you differently. If ya know how to use him, Luigi pwns all. LOL.
So, that is what inspired me to make this guide.
SLDT's Official Guide to the Use of Luigi
Section #1: Introduction to Luigi
While many consider Luigi a clone or semi-clone of his brother, Mario, in terms of his handling as a playable character, there are some important differences between the two of them. For exampl, like Mario, his Fireballs are spammable and help his approach. But, Luigi’s Fireballs are not affected by gravity, which can be good or bad, depending on the situation.
Aside from his similarities to Mario, Luigi also has many unique characteristics. One such quality is that he is a good juggler, this being a result of his rather speedy attacks and his own speed as a character. Also, his jabs, tilts, and aerials are considered quite a bit faster than those possessed by his brother and many other characters, and most of them have a significantly higher level of priority in comparison. Furthermore, his neutral aerial is a "Sex Kick" and can often kill at medium percentages on most characters.
Luigi is also able to chain throw many characters when they are at low percentages. His smashes, like most of his attacks, are considered fast and somewhat strong. His specials are also considered good and great for recovery. If one keeps pressing the special attack button during Luigi Cyclone, Luigi will rise up and this can be repeated in a manner similar to Koopa Hopping. His Side Special, the Green Missile, can be used for horizontal recovery to make up for the lack of horizontal recovery from his Super Jump Punch.
His Taunt is also unique in the sense that it can hit opponents and deal 2% damage. However, if used when the opponent is on the ledge, it becomes even more powerful, and almost always results in a meteor smash KO being dealt to the opponent.
His Final Smash, the Negative Zone, is strange in the sense that it creates a bubble which, if opponents enter, can have many hazardous effects.
Section #2: Unlocking Luigi
I'm sure everyone who's taking interest in this guide has probably already unlocked Luigi and has had him in their roster for quite a while now. But, to clear things up for anyone who just got the game recently, and still need to unlock him to use him, here are the possible ways in which you can do so.
1. Play 22 Matches in Group Brawls, and then defeat Luigi when he subsequently appears.
2. Beat Classic Mode (on any difficulty) without using any continues, then defeat Luigi when he appears after you have cleared the game.
3. Get Luigi to join your party in the later half of the Subspace Emissary.
Section #3: How to Control Luigi
Now, to move on to how to actually use him in fights. First of all, I shall list all of the moves he uses to fight.
Ground Attacks: Normal
Neutral Attack (Press A) - Punches twice with both hands and then thrusts his butt out, performing a hip bump.
Dash Attack (Press A while Running) - Luigi swings his arms multiple times. The last hit has more knockback than Melee.
Strong Side (Tilt the Control Stick Horizontally, then Press A) - Luigi does a roundhouse kick. It can be tilted in different directions.
Strong Up (Tilt th Control Stick Up, then Press A) - Luigi does an upwards kitten-swipe that is great for juggling opponents and causing accumulative damage at the beginning of a match.
Strong Down (Tilt the Control Stick Down, then Press A) - Luigi does a tripping kick for minimal damage. It can be used to Meteor Smash opponents from the edge if they are right underneath his foot when the attack is used.
Smash
Side Smash (Press and Hold the Control Stick (Horizontally) and A at the same time) - Luigi does a spear-hand that can be tilted up or down for good vertical and horizontal knockback, respectively.
Up Smash (Press and Hold the Control Stick (Up) and A at the same time) - Luigi does an upwards headbutt similar to Mario's Up Smash, but with better knockback.
Down Smash (Press and Hold the Control Stick (Down) and A at the same time) - Luigi does a twisting, break-dancing sweepkick with excellent vertical knockback.
"Other"
Ledge attack (Press A while coming up from an edge) - Flips over the edge, kicking the opponent during the flip.
100% Ledge attack (Press A while coming up from an edge at 100% or more damage) - Slowly gets up and kicks.
Aerial Attacks:
Neutral Aerial (Jump and Press A) - Luigi does a "sex kick" that has great vertical knockback. There is absolutely no horizontal knockback in this attack, but it can cause damage to opponents that are off-guard even a few moments after it is performed.
Forward Aerial (Jump in the direction Luigi is facing and Press A) - Luigi does a karate chop that has moderate horizontal knockback.
Back Aerial (Jump in the direction Luigi is facing away from and Press A) - Luigi does a backwards kick similar Mario's with similar knockback.
Up Aerial (Jump, tilt the Control Stick Upward, and Press A) - Luigi does a flip kick that is great for juggling.
Down Aerial (Jump, tilt the Control Stick Downward, and Press A) - Luigi does a quick down spin kick. Can spike in parts of the attack's hitbox.
Grabs & Throws:
Grab (Press A+B or Left/Right on the D-Pad in the WiiMote + Nunchuk Control Scheme)
Pummel (Press A while in a Grab) - Luigi head slams the opponent.
Forward Throw (Rapidly mash the Control Stick in the direction Luigi is facing while in a Grab) - Luigi does a spin once and throws forward.
Back Throw (Rapidly mash the Control Stick in the direction Luigi is facing away from while in a Grab) - Luigi spins three times and throws backwards. Amazing knockback and is a strong killing move when foe is at high damage.
Down Throw (Rapidly mash the Control Stick Downward while in a Grab)- Luigi slams the opponent to the ground.
Up Throw (Rapidly mash the Control Stick Upward while in a Grab) - Luigi turns to the screen and throws the foe in the air.
Special Moves:
Standard Special Move (Press B) - Fireballs. Unlike Mario's fireballs, Luigi's are not affected by gravity and fly straight. They can be easily spammed and are a decent way of edge guarding. Obviously, they cause fire damage.
Side Special Move (Tilt the Control Stick Horizontally, then Press and Hold B)- The Green Missile. It is great for horizontal recovery and can KO if it hits someone at full charge, provided of course that they are at a very high percentage. Also, there is a 12.5% chance that of this move causing Luigi to spontaneously launch at maximum speed, which can seriously damage and/or KO your opponent.
Up Special Move (Tilt the Control Stick Up, then Press B) - The Super Jump Punch. Althoung weak and frequently only causing one percent of damage, this attack actually has a sweet spot (located in the center of Luigi's body) that, if hit, causes him to perform the much more powerful Fire Jump Punch. This attack causes 25% damage minimum, and can KO at low percentages.
Down Special Move (Tilt the Control Stick Down, then Press B) - The Luigi Cyclone. It is similar to the Mario Tornado, but has higher priority, and can be used to quickly dash across the screen). Also, if B is repeatedly tapped while performing this attack, there is a chance that Luigi will rise upward while spinning. This can be helpful for additional recovery.
Section #4: Luigi's Final Smash
The Negative Zone (Press B after having broken a Smash Ball) - It has unique properties. Luigi dances, and a large void surrounds him. Inside the void, the colors become inverted. Opponents caught in the void fall victim to all sorts of afflictions given out randomly to opponents. Luigi dances and chants for the first few seconds of the Final Smash, but is unaffected by the Negative Zone (except a minor decrease in speed while still being faster than most other characters) when he's done. Even if Luigi dies, the Final Smash does not immediately end. If opponents are caught in a negative zone, they are most likely become open targets as Luigi charges his foes and knocks them off the stage. It also appears that Fire Jump Punch can be used to great effect, dealing a one-hit KO in the affected zone. If the Negative Zone disappears, the flowers and the dizziness opponents were caught in earlier will remain and inflict slightly more damage, plus catching them off guard for a short while.
List of effects:
Drastically reduced attack power
Greater launch distance when hit
Increased likelihood of slipping
Flower growth on head, which causes damage
Dizziness
Uncontrollable taunting
Sudden sleepiness
Decreased movement speed
Becoming helpless
