Website Editing Tools - 11-05-08

Okay, so I just got back from scouts, and during the meeting, I was elected the Troop Webmaster. Since I have a Mac, I was hoping to start up IWeb, but I realized that I didn't actually own that piece of software. So I need some website-editing software, and fast.

I already have a server that I'm gonna use, and I'd prefer using something free, but I know that Iweb (which I can get with Ilife 08 for $80) is really easy to learn. Is there anything better that I can use?

This depends. What did you have in mind for the site? A forum, a calendar, etc. Because depending on the kind of site desired, software may or may not be necessary.

Depending on what you want, there are systems called CMS (Content Management Systems) which allows inexperienced webmasters to have total control over their website and content.

Re: Website Editing Tools - 11-05-08

Well, the site itself is already there; I just need a program to edit it.

As you can see, here are the things I'll record:
*News
*Logs of who shows up at meetings.
*PDF's of forms to fill out
*Maybe a few pics

So yeah, I just need a program to control it.

This is a decent site already. It just needs aesthetics. Maybe some nice tabs on the top and a menu on the side would be nice. I'm gonna look for a good way to help you do this.

Either that, or you could basically rebuild the site with a CMS.

Use Notepad =D Sure it's not WYSIWYG, but it's easy to use.

If not: lrn2google. That's right, first page when googling your title :|

Wait, so you can use text editors to update websites? That explains why somebody would ever use one!

So, can Textedit on the Mac update websites?

Yes. With some basic html experience, you can use a text-editor to update content on your site. Depending on your webhost, you will probably have a cPanel with some kind of file manager. This manager will likely have it's own text editor, so you can edit files on the server instead of transferring them back and forth.

That site is a good reference for a beginner. If you have any other questions, go ahead and contact me. I know what I'm talking about ;)
