Microphone not working?

My friend just gave me one of his microphones and he has the exact same one that works fine on his Vista, but when I plug it into my laptop it doesn't pick up any sounds at all. Could someone help, this is really annoying and I have no idea what to do. >.<

oh, well the first thing i would do if i had that problem would be to right click on my speaker icon and click recording devices, click on the microphone, configure and try to figure out the problem. but if i can't, i'll ask this question on Yahoo Answers

The configure box is dark gray so I can't click it. I'll try asking on Yahoo answers though.

it is? hmm. that's weird, your laptop should give you the ability to configure your selected device. hm.

I think it is the Dell Inspiron 1720, or at least that is what it says on the laptop. Or did you mean the mic? I have no idea what the mic is. I can find out though.

Well I meant the mic. I was hoping my research could prove if it was a Vista-only compatible accessory. My neighbor has a mouse only compatible with Vista.

Have you tried installing drivers? Some computer peripherals and hardware will not function until you've updated/installed drivers.

Yeah that's exactly what I was going to propose use the device manager and update it with xp drivers. Did the microphone come with a cd?

No idea what the mic is called. Nothing is written on it, but we are both running vista so it should work.

He said it didn't come with an CD/Drivers. It is "just suppose to work".
