I got Phantasy Earth Zero when it was released, on the first day, everyone was swarming my other wi-fi forum and trading codes, we had like 30 people online and hosting games and stuff, heres how it works.
First, I would like to tell everyone about wifi and offline. This game pretty much works like PSO on the GCN. You can play offline and train your character, and when he/she goes online, your character is the same as the offline file you have, no need to make an online character or anything.
When you first enter the wifi, you will be presented with 3 options, the first one is friend play, the second one is random search. and the third one is solo play (I think its because some quests are only avaliable online.). Wifi is not limited to stupid stuff like castlevania's boss runs, it's a full game with quests, towns, areas, etc.
Friend play: exactly as it says, you can have up to 4 players including yourself in a party, when you have the number of players you want, you start up the game, you all get warped to town, where you stock up on items and then the party leader chooses your quest you will tackle. When you choose a quest, the portal opens and you can go to the area. The game works just like PSO on GCN, you don't need to wait for anyone, its a go anywhere you want game, and you don't have to wait for your friends or anything (except for certain zones like entering the boss rooms)
Random play: For random play, you select the areas you would like to adventure in, and it will search for (try to) 4 people that also want to adventure there, then a random person is the party leader, and he gets to choose any quest that is in the area(s) the party wants. You have limited (pre set) communications, as opposed to friend play, where it's a picto chat with no limits.
Solo Play: for sad loners.
Also, during wifi, when you are playing and one of your friend logs on, it notifies you with a *ding!* and a message on your touch screen, it does not bother gameplay at all and is useful. It also notifies you when a friend hosts a party.
Let me explain three (the first three stages)
Desert/wastelands: First level in the game, monsters here are giant lizards, hawks, the boss is a big dragon, when you hurt it enough, it will get mad and turn red D:! His attacks aren't as fierce when hes not red, he scratches you, flys and does this barrel roll drill thing at you, stomps on you, brethe fire on you, etc.
When it's red, it does either all of the above, and it also flys up and shoots fire the size of a meteor, or stop and make a few fire rings and stuff. and when it dies it goes DD:! and falls down.
Thundra/ice place: before I begin, I'm too lazy to turn on my ds for the official stage names, I'm sorry. This place has wolves, and some monsters I don't remember. The boss of this place isn't a boss. You are faced with waves and waves of yeti (around 5?), the yeti can slap, punch, body slam, jump, or charge at you.
Rainy place!: my favorite stage, this place has frogs, poisonious frogs, giant hawks, and wolfs(?). the boss of this area is an octopus, you are on the outer edges of the arena which is a circle, and the middle is water, where the octopus is. He first attacks you with tentacles, which is a good idea to dodge and counter attack. After a while, he starts trying to shoot ink that hurts at you while attacking you with the tentiacles, then trying to suck you in and eatian joos! Then when you get it really mad (D:!) it will move to the sides of the arena, and it has a different set of attacks. It will try to drill you with two tenticles, and then it will try to sweep you with tenticles, or try to eat you by sucking you in. You could run to the other side of the arena to get out of range, but it moves quick because it can turn the arena.
I'm now a level 15 Human mage, I'm mainly a healer/removing deduff, I say, this is what the DS needed, a full on RPG without limitations like Castlevania. This hit Japan (And America pirates) pretty hard with a box full of features, I'm really addicted to this game and can't put it down, either that or GBAtemp has no other healers to rely on.
If I had to give it a rating, I'd give it a 10... out of 5 X3 I like the many weapons you can choose, and how wi-fi isn't limited, the quest system, chat system, and gameplay.
P.S. If you happen to have this game, PM me, lets play together :3
