I don't know how many HM titles you've actually played, but the games themselves are basically farming/social sims. You get a farm and grow crops and/or raise animals to make money so you can expand your farm, and eventually use your resources to acquire a spouse and live the good life. Seriously, that is it. No zombies, unfortunately. Unless you count the cursed creatures in the mines in Harvest Moon DS.

Anyway, ToTT's online feature is the multiplayer field, one of which every player owns. You plant and grow crops in it as usual, but you can't harvest them; you charge people entry fees and they can harvest your crop. Obviously a really high quality multi-field will be attractive enough to charge a hefty sum. But remember you're playing with your friends, so don't be greedy.

I don't get on the NWF too much because I don't have an internet connection at home, but I go online when I can.

EDIT: There's a lot of potential for collaborative expansion; e.g. if one of the sides has a crop that the other side hasn't unlocked yet, then the side with the missing crop can harvest it and use a seed maker to make seeds out of it once they have the maker. Plus the high value crops that can be shared. I'm sure it'll be faster than building up the farm on your own.
