Virtual console wont accept GC controller

I have 2 gc controllers and downloaded ocarina of time and pokemon snap for the hell of it, now when ever I connect them and try to play it tells me I need a classic controller even though every website I've been on says that it should accept it.
I dont want to buy a classic controller just to play these games, any ideas how I can get this working, any advice would be appreicated

all the virtual console games say that message that you will need a classic controller. did you actually try playing with the gamecube controllers? If you tried playing the game with them and the game didn't recognize it then i would suggest getting a new gamecube controller or classic controller.

YEAH......My games say that but im still able to use the gcn.....its just there for people who dont have the controllers....

When I play Mario Kart 64 and Waverace 64 I use my wavebirds. I cannot play these games with the classic. However, I do play my SNES games with my classic.
